I know this is a car forum, but i figured id ask. Does anyone here use linux, or can recommend a version of linux? Im running suse linux on my laptop atm but have given up on getting my wireless card to work on it. What do you guys use?
1995 Manual HSV Clubsport
Wade Cam :: 9.2:1 CR :: Pacemaker headers :: Twin 2.5" Exhaust :: VT Brakes
1991 Supercharged VN Berlina
9 PSI SC14 Intercooled :: Genie headers :: Twin cats :: HM Twin 2.25 exhaust :: 3.45:1 LSD
SuSE is quite easy to setup wireless with using YaST2, if you want a change try Ubuntu.

I use Fedora Core 6 "Zod"

I am a Linux user. I manage a mail server and my favourite Linux distro is Suse but not the latest version though.
It's funny that my first Internet experience was in 1995 on a Digital Unix machine![]()
Whats linux like??
always wated to give it a try on my pc.
windows sux!
We got rep back, yaaay!
linux is whatever you make it... thats whats so cool.
Its like lego... you can plug all the pieces in to make an OS that does exactly what you want... no more, no less. I love thatwish I could make the switch to linux permanently.
Fedora Core 6 is pretty good, but when I tried to install it on my main PC, I found out there is a fatal issue preventing any hard drives being detected on my model of motherboard only
The great thing about linux though is that was about 4 weeks ago... I'd be willing to bet that problem is FIXED by now
go open source!!
* Phreddy's Blaupunkt Aux input and line out mod
* 18x8 inch Equus Kalibur Wheels with Maxxis MAV-1 235/40R18
* Sureflo 3.5 inch medium-loud cat back exhaust
Benefits of linux
* Very solid for tested releases
* People don't hate it so not many viruses
* Can get customised version to suit older hardware
* Lots of free software
Problems
* A bit of a learning curve
* You need to do a bit of reading
N.B. The backbone of the internet runs on linux/unix should give you some idea of it's power
Look for a distrubtion (brand of linux) that has a lot of support. Ubuntu, SUSE, Mandrake, Red Hat.
For bootable cd version that run off your cd rom look here > http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php
Just type in Linux Distributions in google to see what's available.
<davy> remember when braveheart came out and everyone said you can't have mel gibson playing a scottish guy cuz it wont be realistic?

RedHat has a new funkier version out soon (or is already out). I've used Mandrake, Suse etc but have found that RedHat to be the most user friendly (please don't flame me) hahahha

yeah I run both windows and linux I use linux for most every thing mainly the net coz its alot safer and I find faster. I'm running Ubuntu by the way. windows I only use for games which i find I don't really have time for these days
i use ubuntu- it was really simple to set up. My wireless was easier to get up and running compared to windows and things download a hell of a lot faster on it. The only downside to it is ati havent made a decent graphics card driver so anything 3d is usually pretty dodgy in it. Damn lack of support by major corporations!
Also if you're a bigpond user, look in their file library. They've got a few versions of ubuntu to download including a very cool 'ultimate' edition that has a ton of preinstalled software to get you up and running in no time!
cheers guys may download a version tonight.

Do it. The ultimate version sounds really good. BTW it's just about impossible to get ntfs working under windows so if you want to share data put it in a FAT32 partition.

One cool thing i like about linux is if you have an old computer you set it up to work as a server. It emulates a windows server and you can save data to it like a normal one. Windows doesn't see any difference but it saves it to a linux partition.
Another cool thing to look at is myth tv. I'm working on media portal at the moment (runs under windows xp).

gentoo - this is like the buffet of operating systems.... ONLY what you want, ONLY what you need... you make it yourself and you have only you too blame...
personally? Windows is the only choice i have these days... linux's incompatability is too frustating so i just saty with windows... besides, no enough about how it works and you can make windows useable anyway... really.. it aint that bad... just cranky sometimes...
