well our kitchen sink goes clockwise the bathroom sink goes anticlockwise and the shower and the bath go clockwise so my conclusion is it has nothing to do with northern or southern hemispheres or my bathroom sink is a bloody yank

I remember seeing a travel programme years ago (I think it was Michael Palin's world travels or something similar) and they visited a spot on the equator where there were two sinks apparently set up with one in the northern hemisphere and one in the southern. It did spin in opposite directions as the sinks emptied but you can never be sure whether to take programmes like that seriously!

Also, i'm not sure about the toilets, but my sinks in the UK did spin clockwise. I haven't checked out here yet!!

If you also watch the follow up to that episode it tells you how they tried cut after cut after cut to get it do it. Flow of water is where the whole thing comes into play.

Default It is the same in both Hemispheres

Yes. A tornado spins in the same direction in both the Northern and Southern Hemisphere. By the way, Minux is right. Now back to the reason why people think the wind flows in differing directions in different hemispheres.

Because the earth is spinning, if somone is standing in the Northern Hemisphere the wind will appear to be turning in one direction, while in the Southern Hemisphere it will appear to spin in the opposite direction. And that is not that strange. If someone is standing on the North Pole and is watching a aeroplane fly East, that same aeroplane being observed from the South Pole would be flying west. The spinning of the earth complicates this observation even more, in the case of a tornado.

This observational illusion is only apparent for large phenomenon. In other words, your toilet-water in the Northern Hemisphere and in the Southern Hemisphere will appear to spin in the same direction. If your toilet is spinning differently than your counterparts any where in the world, then you need to throw out that pink elephant in your backyard and change that brand of grass you smoking .

Lets first understand something. Everything in the entire world spins in the same direction. Things may appear to spin in differing directions. The earth falls in space while rotating on its axis, while being attracted by gravity from the sun thus having an orbital path around the sun. This rotating and orbiting at the same time is what influences the turning of objects. Therefore, it pulls in one direction.

Because we are standing on the earth in different hemispheres our position makes it appear that things spin in differing directions. If you really wish to see the actual direction something spins, you have to go out in space where your perspective will not be distorted by the spinning of the earth. This will show that everything spins in one direction. There was a Frenchman who did an experiment (I think it was Ferbor) with a pendulum. The pendulum seem to swing from right to left in one hemisphere, but the opposite in the other hemisphere. This is an optical positional illusion.

That being said, I am referring to natural spinning things. A merry go round is not a natural spinning object. It is powered by electricity. It can spin in any direction its operators chose it to spin.
