Has anybody here had any experience with networking through Vista?
I'm having some troubles at the moment, was running nicely for a few days but its died on me - POS.
Basically I was having trouble with wireless disconnections, so I decided to go the lan path.
I connected the cable, bit comet was working, but my dns server wasn't.
I entered it all in through tcp/ip settings as the dns that everyone had told me to go.
It worked, for about 3 hours.
The computer reset this morning, and now I have no internet at all. I connect to the net via the router/modem.
Any suggestions?
wait until service pack 1 for vista comes outi would go back to windows xp pro

Why go back?
I will clarify that the network had been working faultlessly for a week or so before this happened - and that I can still connect wirelessly to the router - but I am preferring the LAN connection so that I can connect to the router without having to walk downstairs to fix it.
Sounds like a vista feature :/
Is your DNS settings on your computer or your router?
Did you lose your DNS settings when you ran with wireless? Have you tried an updated wireless driver from the manufacturer site?
<davy> remember when braveheart came out and everyone said you can't have mel gibson playing a scottish guy cuz it wont be realistic?

Also check your log files, right click on your computer select manage, system tools, event viewer and check the logs

Yeah the wireless adaptor has an up to date driver.
Firmware on the router has been updated (thats around about when problems started, but levelled out for a while)
DNS is stored on the router from what I gather - even though I'm fairly sure it automatically detects it.
From what I've gathered, by entering the DNS information into the TCP/IP settings was to bypass the router for the DNS?
This did work, but today with the same settings it isn't working.
I'm going to do a hard reset on the router tonight and go through it again. But I'm not too sure what I can do. I could try entering in the DNS settings manually into the router, and resetting all network connections on the PC to default?
Edit: as for log files, I'll get on it tonight when I get home and post them up if you'd like to see them.
what router do you have?

DLINK G604T - It's worked sweet for a while - I'm starting to think that it's dead, was thinking about getting it repaired/replaced on warranty. But it was working for a while. Hence why I think its Vista settings.
you never know...try and test it on another network if you can. I would hate to look like a fool taking back a router that isnt dead. it could be the firm ware in your router as you were saying before...it might not be "vista capable" but if its the latest version then it should be...mmm interesting

Hardreset the modem. The Dlinkt604g are crap. If your going to get a new modem router get (if you can find) a speedtouch 585 4 port wireless. I work for a ISP and can tell you they are easy as to set up. For your network check you IP and may try disable the Anti virus. I know avast the one i use lieks to block all traffic on my comp including networked comps. Where in QLD are you. If your close to me i might come check it out if you like. I have been messing with visa for about 3 months and ill be waiting for the sp1 or 2 (havent decided yet) to come out. Same with all new platforms. First one will always have bugs. Dont you just love the seach funtion in the start page!!!! SEXY!
.:Blown VT V6, DAJ37:.
dlink routers = sh*t. ive got one running with a wireless switch and ive gotta reset the router every 10 minutes if im downloading heavily. they just cant handle a lot of traffic

I love alot of things about vista, very glad that I switched, its just little things like this that have been giving me the ****s. My mate works for a business networking company but isn't so familiar with vista just yet. So he helps but can't navigate as well as he'd like.
Yeah the g604t's are definitely crap haha. I read a whirlpool thread, few people are having the same problem. One guy has suggested a virus, another even tried gettting a new router but had no luck with a netgear.
No antivirus - maybe I do have a virus.
Firewall has been on but I disabled it earlier to see if I was getting blocked.
I'm in Rockhampton.
Looks like I've got a busy night ahead of me, first up hard reset on windows network settings and router. Re-enter username and password for adsl on router. Plug in network cable and see what vista says.
If that doesn't work I might try entering in the dns straight into the router. I think its automatic? Is that what DHCP is/does?
Networking is not my forte.
Stocky: I've only ever had to reset mine a few times until now. It handles me downloading constantly and my gf browsing the net easily. Just for some reason this new firmware sucked anus.
you can't possibly roll back your firware can you?
Also do an online scan through mcaffee or norton. If you're a student you can get either real cheap.
DHCP will only assign you an address DNS is domain name service so if you type in google.com.au it finds the relavent ip for google if you get me?

Unfortunately not spaced, the setup with the firmware on the router is ridiculous, I can't even find an old version on the net. A guy at DLINK did send me a copy of the version I used to have not long ago but changing between computers I think it's long gone - And I'm currently waiting to hear back from them again.
Virus scan is on the cards tonight - I've been recommended Avast Antivirus, apparently its free and gets updated regularly.
Ha, I know that router very well in fact I used to have it but changed it for a Belkin unit. This device is full of problems
If you have a quick look on the internet there seems to be a lot of people having problems with the router and there is also a case of it overheating!!
I suggest you change it to a different unit, go for a net gear but make sure your wireless card supports it.
I had heaps of trouble with, so its not worth hassling with it, just get a different one.
D-Link do make alright routers as long as they're not wireless, thats why i bought one of the last wired routers, D-Link 502T.
Personally i hate wireless to much chance of interferance as well.
We got rep back, yaaay!
Routers in the clear, it still connects to the gateway, its 100% a windows problem. My mate just purchased the G604T-2 - plugged a network cable into his old modem. Antenna into the router. Computer on. Network connected. It's meant to be that easy.
Maybe that is my option, ditch the modem router and get just an access point and a modem seperately.
i'm not running vista but i read some where there vista will have alor of problems with nextwrokgin because there are 2 ip addressing this time round
1. normal
2. Ip version 6![]()
Yeah thres TCP/IPv4 and TCP/IPv6
But I don't think v6 will effect 99% of people - not for a while anyway. Most people will still use the conventional version - And it's disabled by standard.
I've managed to get it working, the same way I did the other night by entering the DNS settings into the windows TCP/IP properties.
Perhaps the router has lost its ability to track it down. I will more than likely send it away and see if I can get it replaced. But if its working for now I can't afford a week or two without it.
