Default Soo... i had an accident today (updated with progress pictures)

unfortunatly i was in the wrong place at the wrong time this arvo. at about 4:15 i was driving home i was involved in an accident. (for those who happen to know the area) i was driving up high street in queanbeyan. a truck pulled out of a side street and lost several (10, maybe 15) lengths of steel bar. it tipped off the side just as i was level with the truck (it was going the opposite way to me). i can ms paint a pic for people if you like

anyway, my car collected it in the front and side. all i remember is that i saw the truck turning out of the side street and thinking 'geez, he is going a bit hard, better move over a little cos he is in my lane'. next thing i know i just saw the bar falling off... a loud noise and then i stopped.

it took me 10 seconds or so to take it in and realise what had just happened. the dash was going stupid cos the airbag went off. i switched the car off, called my work partner (who i had just said goodbye to 2 minutes before) and said he had better come and pick up some stuff.

i got through it ok, only injury was to my right arm. i am assuming the airbag hit my and it feels like carpet burn on my arm. it has a slight red mark but other then that im ok.

i didnt actually realise how lucky i am. if one of those bars had have come through the window i dare said i would be either dead or very seriously hurt. it scares the hell out of me when i sit back, think about it and say 'i came close to dying today'. i mean, it may sound stupid to someone else but its just the way i see it. i was lucky to have only had damage done to my car... not damage done to myself by a 4 meter legnth of 75mm steel bar.

anyway, thats the basics of the story.... ill let the pictures do the rest of the talking.

as you can see from the pictures... i need a new number plate and 2 of my wheels are stuffed

oh... and ill just add, airbags are not as comfortable as the simpsons make out to be! and when they go off they stink!

    airbags stink like gunpowder!

    a very unfortunate accident.

shows how important it is to secure loads.

Bugger. Glad you are ok. Looking at the damage and depending on how bad the damage is to the engine/under carriage, it might be close to a write off . Did the truck stop? Do you get to keep the RHS? (That stuff is very handy to build all sorts of things )

Oddly enough that was my first thought. Damn it did a proper job on the ute though, not good. Would've been friggin scary.

i think its mainly panel damage. there was no weird/clunking noises coming out of the car when it was stopped. the tow truck driver drove it straight onto the truck too.

the other bloke stopped. my dad showed up (cos i called him and told him to come get me) and said that one of the first things he noticed is that it looked as if the truck didnt even have the bar strapped down. we reckon he was just dropping it off around the corner.

and no, i didnt get to keep it could have made an awesome carport too!

Are repairs comming out of your pocket? Or is the truck driver/company going to fork out some cash?

Ive been in something very similar to this, a peice of plywood came off the back of a truck and was spinning and landed flat on my windscreen. If it had spun and hit the window with the egde if may have gone through and killed me and the passenger.

Good thing is you come out of the situation relitivly unharmed.

Did police attend? If so are they processing the truck driver for the dropping of the load?

Mate, with those photos you could work for our Major Collision Unit.

I'm guessing you cops don't pay much attention to the photos eh? The cops are in one of the shots LOL Just stirring you up.

Good to see your still alive Troy.

and I'm sorry to say but I had to laugh at the photo of your ute with the guy standing behind wearing a Ford T-Shirt. I could've sworn I saw a smile on his face
