Heres a funny story that happended to me today!
Rang some wreckers in search of a manual pedal box, found one place in caufield... guess how much they wanted for it? $200 for a pedal box. I almost told them to go and **** them selves sideways!
went to my local wreckers, there a bit smaller and i was just clutching at straws... first car i saw, manual VN, pedal box and cable with a pre dropped coloumb!
so, as i had 0 tools and 1/2 an hour, i got to work, 1 13mm ring spanner, a pair of side cutters, pair of pliers and some vice grips i found in my car, had the pedal box out in 40 minutes... guess how much i paid? for both items, box and cable... $50... pays to stay local and shop around!
i love my wreckers....
anyone else had this crap happen?
aZk.
Really pays to shop around! And thats with ANYTHING
Glad to hear you didnt find out the hard way (after already buying it for $200)
But wait... There's more!!
But that's not all!!!

When I was looking for a VL diff a local wrecker said $350. I asked him why is it so expensive, he said coz that's wat they go for these days. I said well P&J Wrecking around the corner (who I go to for most of my parts I need to get, and they specialise in Commodores) sells them for $150...then he just said that's coz P&J mainly deal with Commodores, haha....so I left. And I bought a VL diff, tailshaft and a pair of VL side mirrors of Steve (Spirit) for $100....can't argue with that! When my diff blew the first time I just bought a VK with no motor or trans for $100 and pinched the diff outta that.

Surprisingly minux is right at least about money cause the value of an item will only be as much as someone is willing to pay.
BTW everyone know's Australia has better wine than italy because our vines in SA are cuttings of the oldest vines in the world (from Frenchy land)![]()

...and the older a car gets, the worse it becomes...
It's a prime example of Catch 22 when it comes to parts for something twenty years old...if you are trying to find something, say a five speed gearbox for a Gemini to slap in an old Rodeoand you do manage to find one in decent nick, the owners usually can charge whatever they want if they know you want it.
The Catch 22 comes in when you try vainly to haggle..."Hey, it's a 25 year old gearbox, how can you charge so much for it?", and they simply say "I know how old it is...try and find one somewhere else then..."![]()
They've got you over a barrel...they know you really need it, and they know how hard they are to find now simply for the reason that they are old and scarce to find, therefore they can ask whatever they like and expect to get it.
You see it at wreckers all the time.
become mates with your wreckers. i did with mine and have got a few things for nothin. or very cheap. chrome 3 inch dump tip. shop wanted 60 bux. i paid nothing. about 80 dollars worth of interior bits n peices. 15 dollars. good blokes at ABC wreckers at wacol
Yeah I couldn't agree more.....I asked the local guy here (the one I mentioned earlier, JP Wrecking) if he had any stuffed old holden 6's coz I need to use little bits and pieces from it to complete mine coz of a few bits that had gone missing. I asked for something pretty cheap coz I don't have much to spend.....and I left with a complete 202 EFI block which even had decent ACL pistons as it wasn't long b4 it had been rebuilt. The bores didn't have any lip and the cross hatching marks from machining were still on the bearing caps and rods. And I got it for free!![]()

i got done $35 for the radiator bottle thingy. It was $55 somewhere else. Still expensive for a 2nd hand piece of plastic i thought.
That was for a VN by the way.
Once a Mercedes is up to cruising speed it lopes along easily and is happy sitting on 180+ km/h all day. Please check the speed limits in your area before attempting this…
lol damn. i was told $5 for one of them that was almost new.
Minux, If you can get them try a nice Swan Valley red.

I definately love pull it yourself wreckers, and yesterday I went to buy a window winder clip, the owner game me one for free... I'm happy!
They were probally impressed you didnt just stuff it in your pocket and walk out.
But yes, its always smart going and meeting your local wreckers. My step dads car had an axe taken to it a few weeks ago (where i ALWAYS park my car but didnt this particular night) windows taken out, passenger doors (2 doors), bonet, one of the headlights and a mirror. I went down to the wreckers to find the parts, started chatting with the guy told him the story, gave me all of the parts for 150 bucks.
