Hi,
I am currently on my L plates, doing automatic licence. I plan to finish my 2 years on auto, but, eventually I wanna go do manual. I told myself I would do auto for 2 years first, that way I can get familiar with the roads, and road rules before I worry about controlling gears.
How do I go about going from Auto to Manual licence when the time comes? Especially, when I have an auto car, no manual. Eventually I plan to get a manual, thats why im asking
Thanks,

if you get an auto liscnece you must drive an auto.
im pretty sure u can start driving a manual once you are off your P's
just go for your manual licence straight away, you can always do a few months in an auto to get used to driving on the road and then move to learning in the manual. The whole point of the "L" plates is so you can learn how to drive and be safe on the road, there is absolutely no point getting your auto licence and then going back and doing it all again to get your manual licence, unless you like wasting time and money.
i know in vic, once you get off your ps, your licence becomes completely open, can drive auto and manual. dont have to do any other tests, etc, just drive it. not sure if wa is the same though. id either ask your driving instructor(if your parents arent doing it) or ring the wa transport department and ask them.
in snw on your red p;s you can only drive auto or manual .. depends what you go for and once you are on your greens you can driv anything

Tassie is different. If you get an Auto licence, you stay on that regardless if you get your open licence or not.
To go for your manual 'P's, if you already have an auto licence, it's my understanding that you only have to display 'L' plates when driving a manual, do your 50 hours, and then sit the driven test.
You don't have to apply for another learners permit.

MMM autosBuilt for lazy men and women
*drives an auto cause he hates the old Tarago which is manual* :P
haha And yeah, who said that on NSW you can drive either on your Green P's is right if that helps :P
Hmm... as far as cars go, what do you guys think... people should have to learn to drive a manual just in case they ever end up using one for a weekend or whatever in my opinion... got thoughts? :P
/end hijack :P
their eyes were open, but still they were blind...
Yeah go manual straight away....it aint hard after a little bit of practice. I think the worst thing for most people is stopping and going....but just practice on a back street or out of town on a back road until u get the hang of it.![]()

Always In Construction Mode!!!!!![]()
man... manuals are piss easy...
got my manual p's first time and haven't looked back.
get used to roads on L for a couple of months and then jump inot a manual and get going, its really not hard. I used ot be so **** with take off but once oyu learn a clutches pattern it easy!
PLUS! manuals are faster, cooler, drop better skids and gives your left foot somehting to do!
GO MANUALS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
aZk.
yeh u cant do that in WA once u get ur auto licence ur stuck wid it til u convert it to manual...mate just get ur manual licence...in the end ur guna get manual anyway so why not just get it now and then ull have more time to pratice.
and mate thats the whole purpose of the l plates...to learn how to drive and its the period in which those plates excuse u from making driving mistakes....well technical ones anyway.
just go for it and be confident about it....if ur not confident about driving a manual (which it sounds like you are) then best thing to do is practice...and practice makes perfect...mmm few too many years of school coming through there lol![]()
go for it bud!![]()

yeah i passed in auto then jumped into manual and could drive fine wityhin a day or 2 and iv been stopped in manual cars by cops and had no problems

yeah its definitely not a rule in SA. apparently it used to be when autos started becoming more common but they got rid of it years ago.
Totally agree! I got my L's on my 16th birthday and drove our manual car home from the test. Sure I was a bit sloppy on the take off and gear changes for the first few months, but it didn't take long for it to get to the point where I wasn't even thinking about it. And like azkwazere I got my manual licence first go.....
People might (I'm sure they will!!) disagree with me, but I believe learning/driving a manual car makes you a better driver. You have more control over the car, and it's not just a 'point and shoot' thing.
hahah SA is awesome . i got my normal L's and i drove both auto and manual .. whats the rules if you get caught driving manual on an auto license ?? why do they do it
I did auto from 16-17 3/4's... Until i had 6 driving lessons in a manual & passed with 97% on my test @ 8:30 in the morning reverse parallel parking etc on main roads...
It's easy after the first couple lessons.
Cheers

Perhaps I'm of the mindframe that if you can't drive a manual then you shouldn't be driving a car at all, but with that being said I think my mentality for that comes from the way I was brought up. Driving an auto or manual has never been an issue for me. I don't remember if I took my license test in an auto or manual and that was only seven years ago. Which do I prefer to drive? Couldn't care less!
I'm certainly interested to see how this thread goes.
I am with you, Manual comes naturally, If you cant get the co-ordination you shouldn't be driving at all. From what I've seen, Anyone who can't drive a manual is very caucious and quite scary drivers on the road. I was brought up driving an auto, Always wanting to drive a manual.. So i did it, manual license first shot, And boy was I proud.
Cheers

EDIT:
In vic if you have an auto license, caught driving a manual It's a decent fine... While on [P] Plates.
If you have a manual license you can drive both auto & manual.
