    Default New hand signals

OK, so I'm finally getting used to the way people are on the roads over here in Aus, but I'm still finding it baffling the number of 'hand signals' people give for no apparent reason.

Instance 1. I'm heading down Marmion Ave road is empty my side apart from me for hundreeds of yards ahead. Guy is waiting to come across my side to turn in, waits, waits some more, then when its just about the most stupid time to go, he pulls across me and his mate in the passenger side gives me the V out of his window. Shame I wasn't going a little faster and smashed the stupid grin off his face.

Instance 2. I'm going down the Mitchell Freeway to Perth and some tard in some old white rustbucket overtakes me on the inside (me being stuck behind a car who is also stuck behind a lorry (or truck as you call em!)). He doesnt keep going (his lane was clear to get past the lorry if thats what he wanted), oh no. He cuts in front of me and slams on his brakes. WTF is that all about? I had my 4 yr old and 2 yr old in the car at the time, or I'd have run right up his arse and then got out and slapped him silly. Lucky for me nobody was immediately behind me. Took his rego and reported him to the police but doubt anything will happen about that one.

Instance 3 (happened this weekend). Going home after a day at the zoo with wife and kids, and a Falcon overtakes me on the inside lane, cuts in front of me then slows down. Left hand land is empty so I jump in that lane and overtake again then pull back over. Get to a set of lights to turn right (red) so stop then this bozo goes sailing past and his mate gives the V and one finger salute out the window.

Is it me or are there just a lot of morons on the roads these days who 1. have no concern for their own or other peoples lives and 2. have the intelligence of an amoeba

You probably have gotten used to the morons in England ( I assume thats where you are from since you called a truck a lorry ) so when you come over here you have a whole fresh lot of morons to get used to.

lol no up here they are just rude. I don't mind letting people in but it ****s me when they drive up the shoulder and merge later therefore extending the time you sit in traffic "cause they are TOO BUSY" in their crap life. I always let people in though if they indicate no point being a bastard for the hell of it. I actually saw people being more polite when I lived in Sydney go figure?

hey mate, you must be having a hard time getting used to our freeways. i hear over there people don't actually travel in the entry lane (causing you to either have to enter at 70 km/h or 110km/h)

sounds like you need to spend more time in the left hand lane... considering most of the issues you mentioned occur when you are in the right hand lane.
keep left unless overtaking. if someone can (and is dumb enough) to take you on the left then is it safe to assume you aren't overtaking?

maybe ive read something wrong but thats the image i get..

But if he is any speedzone below 80 he doesnt need to be in the left lane, keep left unless overtaking is for speed zones 80 or above

well i guess there are freeways with 80 restrictions. must be one of them.

although i have read where it applies to other situations. can't remember the particulars so i wont push the point!

You would actually be surprised how many drivers from other countries in europe are driving their cars in other countries. Also you can tell their individual driving styles. Netherlands usually have campervans....hehehe. But to the point in europe most countries have 110-130kph speed limits merging on the high way.
In Germany the merge lane is a few hundred metres long and you gotta time your run from 70kph to 130kph to merge then nail it cos most cars are coming up at 150+kph on you.
He's probably loving not being sped past most the time though. Much safer driving in australia but bigger wankers on the roads. I have yet to find a typical "hoon" in europe....i dont even see many skiddies around.

    Anyways theres my input.

by the way this has gone off topic from the question of hand signals..........high 5's, im sure we all know that one
Once a Mercedes is up to cruising speed it lopes along easily and is happy sitting on 180+ km/h all day. Please check the speed limits in your area before attempting this…

No if you read the bit on the freeway, I was behind other vehicles. If I have to wait for idiots to pull over so I can get passed, then so be it. When I get passed stuff, I ALWAYS pull over to the left lane. Its against the highway code in the UK on ANY road to drive in the right lane when the left is free when there is more than one lane. Being fined for being an idiot and driving in the wrong lane soon changes those habits trust me. Hope they start doing it here.
If you read the other one, I was in the right lane because I was going to turn right a little further up the road. I was doing 80 in an 80 zone, some moron overtakes me on the inside (obviously speeding to do so), pulls over in front of me, then deliberately slows down to below the speed limit forcing me to slow down too, so I overtook him then he and his mate start gesturing at me as they passed me when I stopped to turn off.

tell me about it, on a daily basis i will be up someons arse with the horn on because there trying to merge onto a 90km/h freeway at 60km/h seriously happens every morning, im just glad it's two lanes and can usually tear across into the right and pass em before they've even hit their indicator.

btw 1 thing i do like about brissy though is almost every one will sit about 10km/h over the limit.

yes i read it, i guess i was unclear on what happened. i've never had people randomly get up me for something ive done on the road so bit hard to follow.
i stay out of the way.

    may i sugest the following

ignore the road rule hand book, they aer stupid, never drive to the rules. i mean there are the usaul rules you need to follow, give way to the right, stop at stop signs things like that. but if they local authority on roads; had their way and if we all drove by the hand book we would never leave the drive way. drive to the occasion, drive to suite the situation you are in.

may i also sugest a helmet and some paitents.... no good complaining, we all complain about the driving over here, and we are all from here.

Yeh true but theres such thing as being curtious(Scuse spelling), it ****s me off when granny sits in the outside lane going 50km/h in a 70km/h zone and if I overtake on the inside il get done (by the way it is illegal AT ALL TIMES to overtake on the inside lane)

not as bad as the cities i know, but here in the country towns we get some real friggin morons

the hand signals in the v symbol are the idiots trying to compensate and apologize for being the totally stupid drivers they are, in my opinion. unfortunately, it seems to go with the old aussie slang, "she'll be right mate!" no idea they have.

    Nope.

You can legally overtake another car by using a marked lane to the left - IF the other car being overtaken is camped in the middle or right lane, this applies to all road categories.

This is the thing with Aussies in relation to freeway class, too many 'sit middle' thinking it is the left lane. If the left lane is clear, use it first regardless of speed.

See diagram/link as to what is taught in HK, China, EU, GB and in the NSW Road Users Handbook etc.

People need to be a bit "kinder" to people on the roads....
    Yup.

    http://www.td.gov.hk/road_safety/roa...ays_/index.htm

NB; another poster references the autobahn as having long entry and exit ramps, not so for the majority of them. Basically the same cross-section applies and sight distance, delinneation and departure and entry designs remain fundamental.

Purchase a hazard-warning triangle for your car to improve the warning given to approaching traffic at both crash scenes and vehicle breakdowns. Keep it in the boot. Everyone sits at 10km/h over the limit? I found the opposite. I just moved to Brissy about 5 weeks ago and found that most drivers are asleep in their cars.

I agree with you on the merging bit, I have been caught out several times when I am trying to merge, and the dude in front of me is doing about 40km/hr when you are trying to merge into a 90 zone.

I have to drive on Moggill Road everymorning, and I swear people go slow on purpose. Traffic lights go green, first car takes about 10 seconds to move. There is a huge gap in the roundabout, yet nobody moves. Its ****tin me up the wall!

I reckon driving in Sydney's CBD was a lot quicker!
