Default what ANZAC day means to me

What anzac day means to me

For me, anzac day is a day of remebering. a day of saying thankyou.
i attend the dawn service each anzac day, (this year i wont be) i remember my great grand father who died on anzac cove. i remember my grand father grew up without knowing who his father was. we all know.

in my eye's the guy's who faught at golipolie are hero's.

my great grand father was in ww1 and died in battle.
my grand father was in ww2.
    my father was in vietnam
i was in east timor and iraq (peace keeping)

    anzac day is for remembering

so i call to everyont his anzac day remember those who gave you your freedom. and remember those who sacrificd their lifes for you.
i wont be marching this year, or wearing my medals. this year is a quiet day of remembering with family.

In my eyes Anzac day is our national day.
I have the upmost respect for anyone who has served this country, our spirit was forged on those shores 90 odd years ago.
    Lest we forget....

    Default Lest We Forget

They went with songs to the battle, they were young.
Straight of limb, true of eyes, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted,
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
    We will remember them.

For me Anzac day isnt just about the past, its about the present also. To honour both men and women who have served and fought for this great nation, This countrys values were founded on the Anzac legend. As an ex serving soldier who seen live combat i can say i have the utmost respect for EVERY soldier who ever served in any war.

I am the same as garth, this will be the first year i do not march with my old unit, however, my fathers(Vietnam), my grandfathers(WW2, Korea) and my great grandfathers(KIA Western Front Pozieres) medals have come out to again be polished, we store them all in a display cabinet and they will pass down to each child that serves.

I'll also be heading back down to the local RSL for a few drinks later this afternoon.

Perhaps you should understand Anzac day before you sprout off crap. Its sad that in this day and age someone can't even understand what Anzac day is all about.

Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Forgetting what happened is a bad idea. The day does not glorify war, I find it hard to believe that anyone who has ever been to an ANZAC day service could think so. Go along next year and watch peoples faces. I guarantee there will be more than one person in tears. People are calling you a disgrace and treating you with no respect because you're showing absolutely no respect to people who fought for this country and its way of life.

What battalion was your grandfather in? Service number? Base of operations? Rank? I fail to see how someone who served can have such a pathetic opinion of the ANZAC's.

i have never said i or my relatives have a pathetic opinion of anzacs nor have i said i dont respect them or feel for the loss of their families. read carefully i have never said anything bad about the diggers, the only problem i have is with Anzac DAY... get it?

i care about australia and i respect the people who fought for our country. i think it is ignorant to say oh the only reason you are sitting there dishing **** out is because of the people who fought for your country when clearly it is not. ANZAC day is in desperate need of updating, its simple as that, and it finally looks like the government is catching onto this and is planning an update of it. i can remember what they did for my country every day, every night before i go to sleep, so can you but we are spending so much time and effort concentrating on what HAPPENED and not on what is happening right now (eg. Iraq). i still think about his stories of the war all the time and i understand where you are coming from but honestly i can say i dont agree with you and i know you dont agree with me. i dont think the approach of Anzac day is anywhere near as effective at getting its point across as it could be. this is evident by the fact that a lot of people dont understand what anzac day is about and the importance of it in our national history. i just hope i got my point across and didnt sound like a wanker who doesnt care about his country because i do.

So i am presuming you have an issue with remembrance day too?

Anzac day is about taking one day out of life and honoring what these men and women did, whether it be for the country or whatever, they sacrificed THEIR lives for us(or in your case no reason). These people deserve a day in their honor for fighting what THEY beleive in, it isnt about glory or anything it is about remembering the sacrifices. No one cares how many medals someone has got(Unless its a VC)or how many times you were shot.

People use this day to trade stories of their war time conflicts, to remember great mates who died, i am yet to meet a digger current or past that glorifies the the day or war situation. Anzac Day to me is like religion to other people, i honour it with my soul, i love getting to catch up with old mates and meeting a few new guys but you will never understand this because of your clear ignorance and the fact you will never serve this country.

I'd keep going but its pointless...seeing your small comment about iraq says it all.

My Grandfather didnt serve with the Australians but rather His Majesties Royal Air service, He flew many missions in WW2 (in Germany France and Turkey etc.) and did support ops for Aussie ground troops, he survived the war (the only one out of his squadron) but passed a few years ago... every anzac day I take that 1 minute out of my day to remember what he and many other women and men did for this and other countries...... LEST WE FORGET.....

i agree with albert5268 in a sense, i believe it should be both remembering the people who sarcrificed themselves and to promote world peace so no one has to fight anymore though the sad thing is it will never happen.
