<davy> remember when braveheart came out and everyone said you can't have mel gibson playing a scottish guy cuz it wont be realistic?
<davy> well look at him now
<davy> an alcoholic racist
Lol.... its everyones fault except the first car there!!! I'm sure panel beaters/repair shops in the area are making a LOT of money!!
yeh itd be prime season for the panel beaters. i cant believe theres soo many stupid people goin drivin in thos conditions. the only part of my car thatd hit that sorta road would be the rear tyres.![]()
and i thought i had traction issues when slighty wet
I know, eh? But I can't blame them, it must be scary as all hell knowing full well that you're going to crunch into the car infront of you, and not being able to do diddly squat about itAt least that second bloke had the right idea, hop out the passenger side and use your body as a snow plough
![]()
I'm so glad we don't get such badly iced up roads down in aus ^^

hmm I'm not gonna pretend to know the right thing to do in that situation... so what is the right thing to do? :S
And ya gotta feel sorry for the cops who attend scenes like that... think of all the paperwork they'd have to do![]()
their eyes were open, but still they were blind...
There's not really anything you CAN do, except stay off the roads if you suspect ice. By the time you get there, it's usually too late
futile I know, but I would've thrown the car in reverse and held the redline in hope of finding ANY traction, or at least creating enough friction to scrape/melt off some of that ice and find a patch of road.![]()

nature's a bitch
What if a car have ABS would the wheel still lockup on a very slippery surface or there is almost no braking at all??
I'm fairly certain the tyres would all lock up, perhaps not instantly, and the car would assume it was stationary.

haha Yeah I was thinking more or less along the same lines as Morton :P O well, hopefully I never have to worry bout it :P
their eyes were open, but still they were blind...
Yeah, but the speed sensor on the other wheel (Rear) would sense the car moving right?? Unless that rear wheel with the sensor doesn't have brakes on it.
ABS and ice isn't a good combination. I've tried it and I had literally no brakes until I got on a bit of road with some traction!!
Whoever said 'There is no substitute for cubes' had obviously never heard of Jet power
I don't think it will affect on commodores or cars that brake with 4 wheels as the the rear wheel will lock up and the sensor will still think the car is stationary and you will have full braking, but still you will slide along and find something to hit.

Black ice is wicked stuff! hitting a patch of black ice is pretty much kiss your ass goodbye situation,

Ok, I can answer some of these questions as I live in these conditions....
Why are people out in these conditions? Well, we get conditions like that for about 3 months out of a year. Life goes on and we all have jobs to do. Kids to take to daycare and groceries to get. We are virtually forced to go out in that weather. We don't want but we also want to live LOL!
What you see is NOT black ice. Black ice cannot be seen. You can clearly see that there is ice there you just have no control over it.
ABS? You going to want that stuff! People seem to think that because there wheels aren't locking up then they aren't braking well enough. Well, news flash. Lets say you slide in 200ft with your ABS working....without ABS you just slid 300ft but because the ABS didn't make any noise or or no screeching of tires many people think that there ABS is of no use. Trust me, you want it. It will even give you the chance to drive around the condition with the right amount of throttle use.
Snow tires are great in snow. Nothing can save your ass on ice. Not chains...spikes can help you keep control at LOW speeds but anything higher then 10km/h and your screwed.
the truck is not trying to divert traffic. It is in fact a plow truck. It's purpose is too push snow and lay down salt to melt the ice which was it was doing...melting the ice with sand and salt. The arrow points to what side of the truck you should pass it on to avoid getting covered in snow as you pass it.
Mmmmm... I don't get how salt or sand melt ice?? you mean they are heated then put on??? Confused here.
the sand doesn't actually melt the ice but it does provide traction when the ice starts to melt from the salt. Google it, I'm sure it wil tell you why the salt will melt ice.
Grab an ice block and pour some salt over the top of it and watch it get to work.
