please tell me someone else has done it![]()
what happend was, i was sitting at work minding my own business when the boss tells me to take one of the surveyors utes down to get a service, yep to easy i thought, the boss throws me the keys and i go out to move it, well the keys didn't work, wrong set. Anyway i run back into the office and grab a handleful of keys to see which one would fit (all hilux's so all the keys are sorta the same), ok so i jump back into the ute half in half out and start testing keys.....well i found it and also found out i didn't have it in neutral or my foot on the clutch![]()

with my car parked directly infornt of it
hoped into the ass end of my car and did a good 2k worth off ass end damage, the rear bar copped a nice hole from the hook on the hilux too.
if a gearstick moves at least 300mm from side to side one would think it's in neutral...not always the case oh and you should always have your foot on the clutch no matter what![]()
anyway please tell me im not the only fool to do this..![]()

Ive come close once, in a desiel landcruzer, just started it while i wasnt in the car, she started took off i was runnin next to it tryin to get in, got in slammed on the brakes n just stopped with about 2cm b4 taking a VN wag from behind, i was walkin round in shock for about 10min after it.
Not the same but my mum forgot to put the handbrake on in her prado, and we live on a hill. About 5 minutes later the bloke that lives across the road came over and said that the prado was wraped aroun the electricity pole in front of his house![]()
geez that was unlucky, does insurance cover that? iv accidently started my car in gear a few times but never been enough to hit anything. most of the newer cars have a neutral safety switch which only allows you to start it if you have the clutch depressed.

My dad smashed into the back of my sisters Datsun 200B (with a VG Valiant)
My sister had pulled off the highway and had to stop for a concrete stormwater outlet. My dad could't see it and skidded in the gravel. The 200B was an instant 170B (15% shorter) The Valiant had a roo bar on it which layed back onto the points of the front gaurds and had a small bit of paint left on it. no real damage. The Datsun was only just drivable with the back of the car out a little and minor crabing down the road. We chained the Datsun to the carport posts (4" steel pipe) and kept driving the car away with a bang on the chain and carport. It took a few days to fix it up. Very funny thing to happen and no one got hurt. Lucky dad's a panel beater/painter

Always worried about this myself, never done it.
I was taught never to start a car with the clutch depresed so i dont... but i cna tell what my stick looks like in neutral... bad luck i guess..

I always have my foot on the clutch, and I also move the stick around to see if it's actually in gear or not. Like if it's in neutral I put it in 1st, then back down just to make sure.....so yeah, it's never happened to me.![]()
