My sister as just bought a 2000 Huyundai excel, now i know that most of the mid 90's ones were crap ( ones i drove down here were! ) so im just wondering for her sake if the 2000 models suffer from unreliablity and general excessive wear and tear.
We got rep back, yaaay!
its a hyundai
OF COURCE IT WILL BE CRAP...Korea cant make cars
but my sister has one and hers is running alright in the 2 years shes had it and all she's had to replace is the clutch
The general rule is Female + Manual = Burnt out clutch
I don't think it would be too bad. I have driven a Hyundai Accent whcih is basically an updated excel and it had a rubbish clutch. It was light as a feather, so it would be easy to ride the clutch without noticing. My sister beat the crap out of a Daewoo Cielo for years and it never had any problems.
Hyundai=Korean for garbage...... well maybe not.....
One of my mates had an excel, replaced water pump, clutch, driveline, alternatorx4 times(battery 5)... shes juss gonna have to keep 1k aside as a "breakdown safety net"
mechanic mate of mine says that they are actually good cars if they are well maintained and have average kays on them. he said that the interiors fall apart though
I did my mechanical apprenticeship at a hyundai work shop there are good cars, cheap parts, one thing they will have trouble with is the key reader around the igintion barrael if the car winds over and over with no fire its not getting the correct reading to the immobiliser and will not let it start we replaced a few of these every week
yeah my mum has a '01 accent and its been good to her, its only done 113,000 and i saw it today and it looked quite good.

2000, model so its twin cam... Perfect!
There's nothing wrong with those cars, and they are bulletly proof reliable...

There is a Excel rally series going on now in the eastern states. The twin cams are a real goer.Factory clutch kit is around $95 new.
i have to tend to agree with this
my oldies had a daewoo cielo 97 and this thing was mecahnically good, clocked up 150,000ks with out any major prob,
just genral mantinace and they are great
last i knew it was still driving around 2 years after we sold it
now we have a 06 daewoo lacetii (holden rebadged now as viva) and this thing is still going good, up to 70,000ish ks
just depends how you look after a korean car, i reckon they have a bad image as people just drive them into the ground and dont care. because they were cheap to start with so they deam them a throw away

im a mechanic, and FYI hyundai has to be one of the most underrated cars around, sure i wouldnt buy one, but there cars built from like 2002-onwards would be competing with toyota standards, reliable as all hell if serviced (which is the same as all cars)
koreans can build very good cars and would probably be better than australian cars these days

hey peeps, I had a 2000 excel and only thing I replaced in 7 years was the rear bumper after I got ass violated. I swapped it a yr ago for a 99VT, mint condition, clubby kit ...BARGAIN! Been working on her all year, yeh yeh Im female..... that loves the grunt cars.
Koo
hahaha way to dig everyone, its been going good, except she fails at driving manual ( clutch smells almost all the time, hasn't fallen apart yet though! )
