    Default Installing a "kill" switch

The other day someone tried to break into my sons car while he was at work . They didn't get in and only managed to stuff up the drivers side door lock .He works in a large shopping centre and his job sometimes requires him to work till about midnight . He drives a KF Laser and i was thinking about instaling a kill switch and was after some feedback as to what would be the best part of the electrical system to immobilise. While i'm at it where would be the best place to put one on my VX . THanks in advance Dayvo

if he has a stereo with a removeable face plate then the user formerly known as 12Voltking is the man to talk to.

Easiest way to temporarily disable it is to pull the lead out of the dizzy. If they are in a rush its unlikely they will see it. I did it in my KF until i got an alarm fitted to it.

Install a + wire from the ignition to the kill switch and a negative wire from the kill switch to earth. When they try to start it the starter motor will turn but their will be no spark to fire up the engine.

sounds ok, but check out this article. Far better than a simple kill switch, and still as simple.

    Browser Warning

wont even cost you a cent if you have a few old bits and pieces lying around

    Hope this helps

any positive lead going to earth is leading to disaster.. DO NOT DO THIS!!!

To install a kill switch , take the - from the coil , run it to a hidden switch underdash/bonnet/boot etc and then back to the coil - side. This is the power lead that puts power to the distributer , with it off.. engine will crank but not spark.. turn it on , car will run.

Another point... even if you take a lead off , they can use a plug lead and run the car on 3 cylinders to drive away.

Yet another point.. chances are they werent after stealing the car , but looking for stereo/loose change/mobile phone/anything of value. Never have anything worth money sitting in plain view.. your just asking for trouble.. oh.. and get 3rd party property fire and theft insurance.. so if it gets taken , at least your covered.. only about $150 a year.. well worth it
Its not what you know or who you know , its how well you can fake it

^^^ same..... in my old car i had 2 switches. a lock switch (u have to pull a little clip 2 turn it off) and the actual kill switch. The lock switch i had connected 2 a flasher relay connected my high beams and my horn worked a treat... its funny watching my dad move my car when he only knows about the lock switch

I used to pull the EFI relay out and stick it in my pocket when my VK had an EFI 202 in it, only way it was going was on a tow truck

Really anything will so the earth for an EFI computer is a good one to put a switch on at it will show up all kinds of crazy faults.

    cheers

I had an idea to put kill switch on the starter motor (VY) of my signal wire as its relatively easy to install if you get under the car and run it under the glove compartment, so car electrics will light up it just wont turn over. Any thought on this?

PS: steering lock is a great theft deterrent too

I was thinking of installing a kill switch, but i just found it less effort to just accelerate into my victims.

i want a kill button... so everytime someone cuts me off, i can line them up in my sights and press the kill button.

think i might hook it up to my stereo and have a "pew pew pew" noise come out... and then put a little crosshairs on my windscreen.

actually, i am liking this idea more and more as i type...

ok, im off to go figure out how to wire it up.

is there some reason why i cant simply cut the power wire to the ignition barrel, and join this 20 amp on/off switch i got from jaycar into the middle via another 2 bits of wire? then stash the switch in a sneaky location i can reach from the driving position.

i dont understand whats with the relays mainly, and, also doing it in places other than the ignition barrel. is there some technical reason why i cant find mention of it being done from that location? or just because it would be easier for a thief to locate.

    cheers

    nice thread dig =P

but to answer your question about a relay.
it is pretty much a switch that works on electromagnetic induction, so you dont need to put the "killswitch" where the wires to the ignition barrel go.
cables depending on size can have current load ratings and these can be effected by adding more cable due to ohms law, more cable = higher resistance (ohms) it may mean it might not work if you just chuck a switch in. also depending on the amps going through a switch it can actually arc, causing a short.

you could just hook the switch up if you really wanted, unless the wires to the ignition also run other devices
how about we make the pedals out of sticky rubber and the shoes with steel spikes. at least my shins would like that
