One afternoon i got a call from one of my customers saying, "major problems! can you come around now?" Sadly i was busy at the time so i had to postpone it until later on in the afternoon. I apologized and she said, "nah its ok". Anyway, i leave home early to for a punctual arrival at her place. The first item on the agenda is her internet connection, which doesn't work all the time, and keeps dropping out on her. Anyway, i go into the Windows Network and Sharing Centre and check her settings, and power cycle the modem. Then i check the ethernet connection going from her laptop to her ADSL modem. The cable has a HUGE rip in it, and you can see that some of the wires are badly severed, rendering this cable unusable. I show the cable to her and say, "This cable is severely damaged, with this huge rip in it it is most likely the cause of the problems you're experiencing."
She looks at it and says, "ooh i knew that was there, but that wouldn't have anything to do with it, right?"

I point out to her that the wires in the cable are physically severed, and therefore that is causing the communications errors she was most likely having. She then handed me another Cat5 cable that she had as a spare. I plugged it in, although it was still having problems. I asked her if she minded if i reboot the computer in an attempt to resolve the problem. She exits some stuff she had open. She goes off and does something else and the computer restarts, and goes to the Windows logon screen. I ask her for her password and she just went off at me, going, "i can't give you that! you're going to get into my system and do all kinds of stuff!"
I then sit her down and explain to her that i need to get into the system to finish the job i was doing, which was repairing her internet connection, and that since her IP address is dynamically allocated, and changes regularly, and that since i don't KNOW, or have any way of FINDING OUT said IP address, that there is no way i can do anything like she is saying. She enters the password and logs into Windows.
I launch IE, and the internet now seems to be working. (WOW! Amazing! Not.

) I then ask, "ok, what else is there that you want me to look at?" She then proceeds to tell me that there was "some other stuff she was going to get me to show her", but that she has somehow "forgotten" it. (normally when people call me over to do a job for them they make a note of everything that they need done) She paid me and told me to have a nice day.
I have to say though, maybe i'm just having "Bad Customer Blues" or whatever, but IMHO, there are just some people that should not be allowed near computer equipment. Especially if they are unable to use and maintain it in a proper manner. Like, this lady has a desk on her front balcony that she calls her "office", where she has the brand new Dell Inspiron laptop, and her new printer, and everything else. This is near a main road, and near the beach, and completely unsecured. This computer is protected from the sun, but thats about it. The computer is physically unsecured so anyone can just go and take it quickly, and since its on the balcony you can easily see it from the road. Also, she lets her dogs on the balcony (which is normally fine, since most people don't have expensive computer equipment on their balconies), and these dogs have a habit of chewing wiring, which explains the damage to the ethernet cable. On top of that, since this is near the beach, the computer is completely exposed to the salty air, which can cause metal to rust at an accellerated rate, compared to what it would indoors, protected from the elements.
