Just a quick question, is there a quick online service that will let me check the VIN and rego of a used car to make sure everything is legal?

You can do a revs check, costs about $6

do a revs check here https://online.revs.nsw.gov.au/revs/public.htm If you dont want a certificate it wont cost anything. If you want a certificate as minux said it costs about $6

ive found the only time that revs works is if you ring them and talk, the web search dont work

Vicroads certificate of registered interest - $9.50. If the car has come from interstate, good luck tracing its history.....
