Default pc tard woes, also free anti spy/malware?

ok, so yesterday i finished building and installing stuff one a pc for a tard at my work, chucked his old pci modem card in, because he's still on dialup , even found the drivers for it too. the only thing i didn't install was antivirus, cos AVG is 25mB, and he said he had norton.

so i get an sms last night "i accidently deleted my modem" i don't know what he meant, but i assumed he meant he uninstalled drivers or something. didn't have my pc in front of me, so i couldn't expain to check for it in computer managment.

so today he told me he'd bought an external dialup for $70 "because the guy said it was quicker" and had gotten online. good i though.
then he told me he "only went to the optus site, and to an anime site, now he was getting popups telling him of "registry errors" and to go to RegistryCleanerXP and download stuff" he was seriously about to do it too!
he of course hadn't yet installed norton or anything else
i know some people aren't as l33t as others, but seriously, i didn't know tards like this existed.

anyway, rant over. i need to suggest an anti mal/spyware app for him which will be easily updated, (spybot seems to take ages to update iirc, and that's on my adsl.)

I use adaware and AVG, he would have to download a cleaner for that crap he's got though because even though adaware may find it, it won't clean it. I also use ZoneAlarm firewall, however good that is.

    Use the following:

Adaware - Ad-Aware SE (Removes Ads / Popups)

Spybot - Spybot - Search and Destroy (Removes Spyware)

CWShredder - CoolWebShredder (CWShredder) (Removes Browser Hijack Pages)

AVG Antivirus - AVG Antivirus Trial (Virus / Trojan Scanner)

Cleanup - Cleanup (Cleans up Temp files / Temporary Internet Files / History / General Junk)

even though the downloads may take a while on dialup, these programs are excellent and will remove just about any junk that comes from the net.

Don't use Nortons if possible, Huge program that takes up heaps of memory, hard disk space, has huge update downloads and is very slow and can slow your computer to a standstill.

If you need further help in removing items, please PM me

    Cheers

What on earth is wrong with Norton's stuff?

I use Norton 360 on my laptop and its easy to use, updates only take a couple of minutes with a decent broadband connection and its really unobtrusive.

Edit - just read that you wanted something suitable for dialup.

    Go ZoneAlarm then.

nah, no prob with it, i use it here on my pc. it's just that the guy's already using norton for an antivirus, and i already know about avg, so there's no point anyone answering any questions about it again

Norton is ok if you have 2395635623904752039457235GB of RAM to spare. Worst developed program in the world.

Agree, it also wants to scan every thing you open so it slows everything down. I used it for a while then buggered it off.

    Wouldn't that be 2395635623904752039457.235TB?

The new Norton(that came with my vista laptop) isnt as bad as the old Nortons, and im anti norton all the way.

But I use Kaspersky, low on system resources and works well. Its best to steer clear of those type of people i have found, all you end up doing is too much for them and you end up in the **** when stuff dies. Don't know computers....go do a course.

i used to run avg antispyware, webroot spysweeper, adware, and spybot sd. then I tried superantispyware. it found over a hundered traces, with about 30 odd spyware programs on the computer that the others didnt pick up. whats better was it is also free.

Now i run peer guardian 2, avg free, superantispyware free, and agnitum outpost.

i might add that the spyware component of agnitum is absolute rubbish

I had nothing but trouble with avast, and pc defender. kind of like the old black ice. rubbish. It would be better to get the good stuff, so nothing got into your computer in the first place, rather than finding out too late. even at my bandwidth, it would only take a few moments to get all the info anybody would ever need. take part in a few lan parties, and see if you can hold onto your license numbers from the other guys. that will test your firewall
