Hello, I have problems with file sharing on my network and so far no-one I know has been able to solve it.
Current setup:
2 computers, both with on-board NIC's and running XP Pro.
Cat5e cable.
5-port ethernet switch.
The problem is that whenever I try to access the other computer I get either a permission error or path error as pic below shows.
I currently have dial-up and I know the hardware is fine because I can run the internet over the network between the two computers. I can also ping each computer with no problems.
IP addresses on the network have been manually set. Both computers are on the same workgroup. File sharing has been enabled. I have been through all the settings I can find but still cant find the problem.
If anyone knows what is wrong or can shine some light on the problem, that would be great.
Thanks.

Sounds like a firewall issue blocking the connection, thats what happened to me, i was able to get internet but when it came down to the file sharing part i wasn't able to get into the other computer because of the firewall.
I always have the Windows firewall turned off and use Zone Alarms instead. I have been through the zone alarms settings over and over again. I have even turned off both firewalls for a test try and still no luck.
Ok problem found.. Zone Alarms.
I completely shut down the service and the problem was goneNow to work out how to allow it.
Umm i believe its in the zone section of the firewall i think, brain isnt fully around at the moment to think where it is.
Yeah its in firewall advance option somewhere i use to have zonealarm but it gave me the ****s (well it gave the missus the ****s which in turn gave me the ****s) so i got rid of it. I remember its where you allow ports for other program you go in there and make a new allowance (?) and fill in the details
Thank you's heaps. Never would have thought to add it lol![]()
Glad to be of help, yeah it is a pain in the ass its something you don't expect but happens, remember it doing it at work with the sales mangers computer couldn't think of what was causing it until i played around with the firewall.
Next problemlol
After adding each computers IP address in Zone Alarms I can now see the other computers sharing folders and printer. I can also use the printer. But I cant open the sharing folders because it says "Access Denied" ..hmmm
Might have to shut down zone alarms again and see if its the problem again.
No worries azzfox glad i could help i actually know SFA about computers but seems i know a bit more than i thought.![]()
Ok zone alarms isnt at fault this time.
Checked sharing permissions for the sharing folder and seems to be ok. What could it be now![]()
u shouldn't have to add each computer in zonealarm all you need to do is add one ip in there.
I added the IP for this computer in the other computer and vise versa.
For some reason it now wants to work properly. Thanks again anyway.
