As a computer technician, I fail to see how iTunes can bugger up your PC. You know, you don't have to use iTunes, there are alternatives, but iTunes works for me.

    ctrl + alt + del

then check how many i-tunes related things are running, and how much memory they use.

what are the alternatives to itunes?

I have 2Gb of RAM so I wouldn't notice if it is memory hungry or not. You can use Winamp. There is a plugin for iPod support. Anapod Explorer is a good one as well. I have used YamiPod and it was decent.

I got a creative Zen Vision M 30G in black colour, they looks good and works well with windows media player. I would recommend Creative if you are thinking non-apple product.

has anyone had a look at the new 160gig ipods? I'd assume that the newer ones don't have the problems that the older ones had.

Anything will be a piece of **** if you don't look after it and treat it like you would any other piece of expensive and delicate equipment.

I can vouch for Anapod. Bloody awesome tool, beats Itunes any day of the week. Has a small memory footprint and just uses drag and drop windows explorer. Just like shifting around folders and changes tags on the fly.

Only downside is it isn't free.
