Who here likes snowboarding/ skiing?
Well as some of you may know we went to New Zealand ( south Island) to go snow skiing again and had the most awesome time. Even though the start of their season was not that great for snow falls we had 50 cm of snow on our 4th day and then several smaller falls of 35, 15, 10 and 7 cm that saw us on nice powder for nearly the whole trip.
We managed to actually ski for 19 days and we also got 2 days of snow boarding in as we decided we better give that a go too. ( we picked it up fairly well but compared to skiing we suck at boarding at this stage.)
Next year we are going to try to just mainly snowboard so we can get better at it.
We can do jumps etc on our skis but we are not good enough on a board to have a go yet!
All i can say is that if you have not given either skiing or boarding a go .... try it... they are sooooo much fun!
Tell me all about your snow/ ski board experience!![]()
Ive never seen snow in my life. I want to go snowboarding.
no broken bones? expencive outing?
it was broke before i got it
Dam... that sucks!
If it is any consolation i had never been skiing until 4 years ago.
It is so addictive it is not funny.
Apparently if you can skateboard or surf you may pick up snowboarding easily. I only tried skateboarding when i was a kid ( about 30 years ago and i was really bad at it, ended up on my arse more than anything else) and i tried sufing for the first time 6 years ago for 2 days. Managed to stand up and ride a few waves within the first hour but i reckon i would have looked like an absolute retard doing it! But hey... i had fun!
So yeah if you can do either of these you may get to pick up boarding nicely.
Good luck on giving it a go one day!
Yeah, I used to ride some waved and did a little skateboarding, im quite nimble on my feet. Thats why I really want to give it a go.
Luckily both the GF and i did not end up with any injuries from it .... apart from some dam sore legs and some muscle groups that i had forgotten ever existed.
Gf got taken out big time by someone when we were on a black diamond run... she finished up sliding nearly 100 meters from where they colided because it was so steep. But due to the nice fresh snow falls etc she did not get hurt badly and she continued skiing after we retreived her skis.
Afterwards she told us that she thought it was an avalanche as she did not know what happened and she was just tumbling in this great big cloud of snow!!! HAHAHAHHA! Luckily she is very flexible and has very bendy arms and legs!!!
It is actually cheaper for us to go over to New Zealand for one month skiing then it is for us to travel down south and do it.
Plus the scenery is just breathtaking every time.
Kasem do you ski?
Been to NZ for snowboarding for two years running, and absolutely loved it both times. It is surprisingly cheap compared to Australian prices, both times I thought I had spent more money than I really had thanks to the exhange rate.
Snowboarding isn't too hard to pick up with a little tuition, especially if you're used to skateboarding, wakeboarding or surfing - anything you stand sideways on basically. I haven't been to Queenstown or Wanaka yet - I'm saving that for later on.
I have to agree with the earlier comment about scenery too - almost everywhere you look is just amazingly scenic.
Hey Klaw, what are your favourite ski field there then?
My 2 are Mount Hutt and Cardrona.
Yes they are commercial felds but just soooo much fun!
When i went the first time 4 years ago we were very lucky because the exchange rate we got was about $1.30 - $1
Last year it was $1.20-$1
This year it was like $1.10-$1
But at least it is still in our favour and meals etc seem so cheap and fricken huge over there!
I occasionally go up to Mt Buller. Comin down the summit (or any steep run) with the side of the board cuttin into the snow and carving is the best feeling.
first time i went snowboarding was with the school a few years back... ended up coming home with a broken wrist and me best mate came home with a broken collar bone, i probably should have taken the free lessons or at least the ones where they teach you to turn the bloody board....
yeah i been to the snow a bit this year, just to buller, skiing is awesome, havent tried boarding yet tho
OUCH!
No doubt about it wrist guards are a must for boarding. ( Well for us novices any way)
We saw a few wrist injuries and it seems like a few very sore tailbones from being dumped on yer arse.
We had a lesson straight away as we knew there could be some potential injuries so we didnt want to tempt fate.
The instructor we had was very good and because it was only me and the GF in the lesson we managed to get good one on one and he was pretty stoked with our progress too.
SO YER! Lessons and wrist guards are a must!
I havent skied in australia yet.... what is Buller like?
When you get a bit more skilled, goto Craigieburn. Steepest terrain in the southern hemisphere, and its all rope tow's with nutcrackers. Its a club mountain, with a hostel that can sleep 80 people. No other access. Only place worth going in NZ these days... Their last few seasons have been just as bad as ours.
Never been myself, but heard the other day that a teacher/co-ordinator from high-school is paralysed because he had a really bad skiing accident.
He was putting his gear on, just sitting down and he started slipping across the ice and went over a ledge...

Yeah mate,
Was a great trip and the locals were friendly as ever.
Even went to a car show in CH CH which was pretty darn good too.
Struck it luck with the snowfall as it was shaping up to be a bit light on ....... but we got reasonable falls which made it all sweet for us.
We will be back for sure next year again. One of my mates that i work with is moving there next february for 1 year and they own an awesome house in Queenstown overlooking the lake.
We always stay in a campervan, but next year we can stay with him if we want.
We didnt even go back to queenstown this year... we had too much fun elsewhere.
So the planning can begin again already! Really gives you something to look forward to each year!
Snow boarding is awesome fun but real hard at first. and it scared the **** out of me because unlike a skate board i couldnt just jump off. it hurts when you land ass first aswell
Yeah Fitzy, we have seen more people hurt snowboarding then skiing so far.
I dont know what the proper figures would be but it just seems like when people are learning they are injured more easily if they are boarding.People can pick basic skiing up quite easily because they aonly need to snow plow to stop.... but boarding is harder to start with than gets a lot more freestyle and adventurous.
Last year my mate landed hard on his tail bone and was very sore for 2 weeks. Poor bugger! Looked very painful!
Hey Ethan i hope ya get to give it a go one day! MUCHO FUNO!!

the only thing i ever hated about skiing was not getting back too the top of the hill fast enough so much fun going flat out down hill unpowered like the fastest man on the planet have you seen the sort of slopes he goes down in his airodynamic suit last time i heard he was going up some himalayin mountain where the air was thinner and he could go faster i think he still holds the record for human speed un powered in the 100's of mph crazy
competely addicted skier here.i also board but skiing is definately better.i skied 14 days this season at mt hotham. and im saving hard at the moment to go to canada and japan for a 2 months over christmas.cant wait![]()
