I hate roadworks that aren't signed properly
So this morning i was doing a driving lesson in the manual. (had my auto p's for years, and i'm a fantastic driver in an auto, but i'm now going for my manual) Anyway, it was near the end of the lesson and we were going down Takalvan St in Bundy. Anyway, right before the lane closed i saw a sign saying that the lane was shut, so quickly i had to change lanes. Had a VY right next to me, with a little gap in front of that, behind a pink Hyundai Excel, so i quickly went up a gear, indicated right and got up enough power to merge lanes, while leaving enough space between me and the VY. Light went red and the Hyundai put on its brakes. I immediately downshifted and slammed the brakes on, everything was ok, but i came so damn close to rear-ending the Hyundai! Obviously everything's ok, but i still think that roadworks like that, especially on a main street, such as Takalvan St, should be signed a lot better...they could've had a sign a bit further down saying something like, "LANE CLOSES AHEAD" or something similar, thats all.

Normally i would've, but in this case i didn't, as i'm new to driving manual, and therefore i obviously had a lot of other things to concentrate on, lol.

Unfortunately if you ended up having an accident as a result of you "concentrating on other things" that wouldn't really stand up as a defence. Biggest driving tip I have found is that you need to drive for others around you, not just yourself. You basically need to anticipate the other drivers movements. Not as easy as it sounds though, but a good frame of mind to have when out on the road.

So true, vy_storm. There's such a surprising number of people out on the road who have no idea what they're doing, and a lot of the time you have to keep them in mind and drive around their exciting detours. I find I often have a count of cars behind me, and their positions, so in the event that I have to change lanes in an emergency, I know whether or not my blind spot is clear, and whether I can shift left or right without having to risk a head check.
Stuff like that will come with time though, goVZ. At least you didn't get booked for speeding in one of those roadwork zones where the left lane is signed at 40, and the right line signed at 80

Without sounding like I'm having a go, which I am not, the thing to do would have been to indicate first, then slow down and pull over behind the VY. You put yourself in a risky situation by accelerating to get in front of it.

the worst thing ever about roadworks is that the workers never take there signs down at the end of the day so you have to go slow when the signs say slow down work men ahead when in actual fact theyve all go awol(home)

Road work zones are exactly that for a duration of time, the council allocates a road work zone for a perticular time period (say 1 month) and it reamins that zoning until the time expires, the work may be finished but its still that zoneing.
Doesnt matter where the workers are, if the signs are there, thats the zone.
Thats how it works.
aZk.

There's some roadworks going on near me at the moment and the signs tell you to merge right when you actually have to merge left!!

I may be wrong caus im still only learning to drive a manual and rarely get the oppurtunity to drive a manual. But whern going to accelerate you drop down a gear to get more revs, not up a gear as acceleration will be slower. Also i dont think its ever wise to speed up to try and fit in because if you cant fit in then your screwed or if the other person brakes, well you know wat happens their lol.

Well, there are also standard distances that the signs must be placed. Since it was in Takalvan St (or any for that matter) they SHOULD Ihave made them the correct dictance from the roadworks area (not saying they arnt or are since i wasnt there) I do kinda know the St because I live in the Bay. On the topic of roadworks i too hate them, but i mostly hate the ppl who speed through them in ****ty cars and dont give a rats arse of the other ppl on the road spraying them with bitumen as they fly past at 100km/h.
