I took my car in because it was making a loud whining noise and I didn't have time to investigate it so i dropped it at my dealer on the way to work. They told me it was the power steering pump making the noise so i promptly purchased a reco off of ebay ($110) and replaced it... it was still making the same noise.
So i took it in to the dealer again and told them. They said they had no idea. I asked them where they're stethoscope or pipe or whatever device they used to find where noises were coming from was. They proceeded to tell me they didn't have one!! No wonder they thought it was my power steering pump if they were just guessing where the noise was coming from. I quickly looked around their workshop and picked up a piece of tube i found on the ground stuck it to my ear moved the other end around my motor and found it was my lower idler pulley making the noise. This was a $30 replacement that takes about 2 mins to install compared to the $110 (plus cost of power steering fluid) and 20 mins it took me to replace the power steering pump! Now my car sounds brand new again!
Next time i will investigate the problem myself BEFORE i take it into the dealer.
Is it normal for your Holden dealer to not have a stethoscope or anything to find where noises are coming from? This is the same dealer where the apprentice (who has been there for 3 months) knows more than the chief mechanic!

I can't fault the dealer i use. We have always had at least 2 cars with them, always been great.

Not all dealers are the same... Personally I hate dealers, all they do is rip you off.
