MOTOR-RACING fans attending this weekend's Bathurst 1000 in central western NSW will be forced to pass through police checkpoints and face confiscation of "excess alcohol".
Police and security staff are searching the vehicles of V8 fans already streaming into the Mt Panorama race venue in Bathurst for "contraband, prohibited items and excess alcohol".
Police and race organisers have set a limit of only one carton of standard drinks or equivalent per adult.
Any surplus alcohol will be confiscated at the checkpoints, while no glass will be permitted into the venue.
Anyone found with prohibited items will be kicked out and refused re-entry for the race.
The maximum penalty for possessing a prohibited weapon is $11,000 or two years imprisonment.
Several people have been arrested already and issued banning notices for the possession of drugs and fireworks.
Police also have issued a number of cannabis cautions, while a large quantity of beer and spirits has been seized by security staff.
Tens of thousands of V8 enthusiasts are expected to attend the Bathurst 1000, which officially starts today and finishes with Sunday's race.
Good to see what was once the best week to go away for is now turning into a pansy fest. I used to love going to bathurst but have not attended for the last 8 years simply because the fun has been drained out of it. Used to be a huge mens week away, loads of booze, burnouts, car fires, even strippers(had 4 in our tent city) etc, now its too family orientated and the joy of it has all gone.

I agree that was a little suprising! lol

Thing is Bathurst was always known for what happened there, there was minimal fights, minimal injuries and ****wits were quickly dealt with.
The do gooders screwed this event over, i want it to go back to the days where if you seen a woman all you would hear all the way up the mountain was "Show us your tits" being screamed.

What a joke. The last time they tried to ban alchol, some mad chopper dug a big hole at the top of the mountain and buried a ton of alcohol in it.
When I was a kid, I used to go every year back in the 90's when I lived in Orange (30 min drive). I always had a good time and was never troubled by a drunk. In fact, I don't even remember seeing any, I was too interested in the cars. Using kids as an excuse is pathetic. Up the top of the mountain sometimes gets a bit crazy but down the main straight and Hell Corner, everyone is pretty well behaved. There are many families who attend and hang out in this area. I wouldn't hesitate to take my kids there.
Weapons and fire works - no problem with them being banned. They have no place there. Alcohol - as others have said - what a joke. It's the boys weekend away and if you don't like it - don't go up the mountain. Simple.

It's known to everyone who loves motorsport, if you camp on top of the mountain it's going to be crazy. I agree weapons shouldn't be allowed, but I think it's stupid to not allow people to bring in excess alcohol. How is it better to have them driving back to a pub to get more alcohol. More chance of drink drivers and we don't need that.
<davy> remember when braveheart came out and everyone said you can't have mel gibson playing a scottish guy cuz it wont be realistic?
<davy> well look at him now

BTW If you think alcohol will be reduced to 1 carton per adult for the Tooheys 1000 you are sadly mistaken.
Very true. Its happening everywhere though. I have lived on Phillip Island my whole life, and some of my favourtie memories are of the 500/Moto GP weekends. They used to do burnouts and wheelies up the main street in Cowes. Now I have to admit it was a little bit risky, but everyone watching knew what was happening and they accepted the risks. The crowd did the right thing and stayed away from the road (most of the time).
But in the last 5+ years the atmosphere has changed. No longer can you go to the main street of Cowes and watch the bikes doing burnouts etc, the police have clamped down on it. I can understand why they have stopped such things from happening, but it is still a shame....
The only reason I can understand for the crack down is to minimise the risk of people throwing stuff at the cars or risking life and limb to get on the track. With the speeds they do on corners they cannot see around I can understand minimizing incidents.

why do you need to be at the track to get absolutley hammered. why not just stay at home?
i don't drink so don't understand it.
ECOTEC KICKED IN yO!!!!!!
im not a drinker myself, but when i used to it was a matter of atmosphere.
it's like saying why go out to drink (pub/club) when you can drink at home people do it to get out of the house and have fun, same goes for bathurst a chance to go out and get roudy with your mates![]()

i think one carton is fair enough, i'd be ****faced at the end of the day if i drank a whole carton in the sun, possibly passed out![]()
We got rep back, yaaay!
PFFFFFFTTTTTTT.... don't agree on the 'Men's' bull****.
I've been to Bathurst and the only issue I have is that most of the drunkards don't even know what's going on on the racetrack.. But yeah, I've been to the top of the Mountain and while it's not the most 'sophisticated' of places, it wan't as bad as I expected (from a females point of view).
i was under the impression that its one carton per day!
