Well, i was with some mates yesterday and they were rattling off all these stories as kids on how they used to shoplift at Safeway and Milk Bars etc. I was horrified to know that so many people did this growing up.
Did you ever do this sort of thing growing up and why did you do it?
For me, i didn't dare, my old man loved to get his mothers school cane out for use. I found this out when i took 20 cents from him to play excite bike at the pinny parlour when i was 8. Never again, i wouldn't even now think about stealing something in fear of that bloody cane lol.
I'd just be interested in hearing what you guys as kids got up to

You know those little gift stores in the shopping complexes? The ones that sell kitchenware and cutlery? Well, my mother used to go to one of these on an almost weekly basis - and I was, what... 12yo at the time? They had these wonderful coloured pearl marbles in one of the display vases - I DESPERATELY wanted them to add to my marble collection.
I think I still have most of them in a box somewhere in the garage now... my pockets were FULL - I was trying so hard not to let them rattle on the way home!!!
... oh yeah. I'm HARDcore.
But I'm not a very big advocate of theftI tend to look down upon blatant thievery, such as mindless shoplifting etc. Anyone can do it. If you want to impress someone, steal a ferrari.

Well.... I never stole stuff from the shops but from my old friends when I was around 8 - 10yo. I stole a lot of pens and pencils at school and even stole my teacher's pen which i think is worth a fair bit.
Eventually karma got to me, and thats when I lost my whole pencil case at high school.
So had to buy all the stuff again.
Ever since never stole anything especially when I got my first job during high school.

I can remember i tried once..... ( hangs head in shame)
I was about 6 years old and we were at the local shopping center and i decided i wanted some lollies and i knew mum would not buy them for me...... so i hatched an ingenious plan that seemed at the time absolutely fool proof!!!!( yes.... it proved i was the fool!)
I placed the packet of lollies worth 40 cents in mums handbag when she was not looking(no one would ever look there) We get to the checkout and mum goes to get her purse out of her handbag...(you guessed it) it fell out on the counter in front of everyone to see.
Mum was horrified to say the least. She then proceeded to lecture me and she even pulled my pants down and spanked my bottom in front of everyone!!!!DAM EVIL WOMAN! HA hA hA!
I thought it was all over until she finally mentioned those words that sights fear in all children with "Wait till your father gets home" I SHAT MY PANTS !
( Not literally) and contemplated running away from home cos dad was a tuff bastard!
I will never ever forget copping dads leather belt accross the arse and back 40 times.... ( once for every cent it was worth!)
I have never stolen again in my life.....!
I guess that was 30 years ago now... and things were a bit different back then, but i tell ya what it certainly taught us respect and that we better not play up or else!
I reckon i am a better person for it! Thanks mum and Dad!![]()
Whoa, i bet you never pulled that stunt again, Rhino Racing. My days at primary school (1990 -> 1997) were pretty much the tail-end days of when kids would get the cane...i remember this guy in my class used to get the cane at least once a year, sometimes more. I wish we could go back to those days...getting the cane or belt or whatever may hurt like all Hell, but at least it put the fear of God into you and taught you respect. I see kids these days get away with far more than I ever would've when I was their age, and i'm only 22! One night a few weeks ago, a mate and I were at KFC. Anyway this kid comes up to me and spills some of my gravy. Didn't get into trouble. I tell you what, were that me when i was his age, my parents would've flogged the **** out of me!

I stole a packet of chips when I was in primary school, from the corner shop. Didn't get punished by anyone, in fact I enjoyed every single one of those chips.
I saw alot of shoplifting in my time working for a small convenience store. It's really easy to see most of the time and twice as easy to stop if your onto them straight away. But I was amazed at the range of people that would be in there, going from your straight derro's that would be trying to steal a packet of tim tams to someone that looked genuinely poor that was trying to get real food.
try working in a liquor store. people think theyre smart the way they try steal but its so obvious its not funny. for example -
- 2 guys walk in, one guys asks me about a bottle of wine hes after(distract me), while another guy walks around the shop stealing
- hanging around the spirits, grabbing one, walking to back of shop, removing security sticker, walking out
- same as above, expect its a group of guys hanging around, hiding what one person is doing. this happened on grand final day. bottle of jager stolen, but they were caught the same day
as soon as i see someone dodgy, i walk into the room behind my counter and watch every move on the cameras. some of them even walk out back where we store all of our cases of spirits, so as soon as i see that on the camera, i go straight up to them and ask what theyre doing. we actually had some people sneak out to the back of our shop, open a case of scotch, and passes it bottle by bottle through a small window in the back. bastards

Minux, you are a case in point. The fact that the fear of the cane instilled the respect for the law you have today is exactly how I see corporal punishment.
HAHA thats great! Shift the blame onto the kids
Yes i have stolen. When i was younger (early teens i suppose) me and mates used to knick stuff every now and then. Nothing of great value, just little odds and ends that people probably didnt even realise were gone. Not real proud of it, but as a group of young blokes growing up in a small town its bound to happen.
We used to get up to all sorts of mischief growing up, but most of it didnt effect anyone but ourselves.
There are no stupid questions, just stupid people
