So i was talking to a friend of mine, and they were telling me they want a v8 in their vn commodore. I've tried convincing them that this isnt allowed in victoria on P plates, on the old or new restriction system. Can you guys tell me the exact laws concerning 5 litres on Ps, for the new and old P plate system?

Wade Cam :: 9.2:1 CR :: Pacemaker headers :: Twin 2.5" Exhaust :: VT Brakes
1991 Supercharged VN Berlina
9 PSI SC14 Intercooled :: Genie headers :: Twin cats :: HM Twin 2.25 exhaust :: 3.45:1 LSD
from what i understand no v8 what so ever, no if but's or maybe's.

no v8s at all

I thought it was 125kw/p tonne.
New law = no v8s at all
old law = 3.5 litres to every tonne and 125 or 135 kw/p tonne
Not many coppers actually get you on the capacity to weight but there are a few that do. I think weedo was done by that.
There are only a few of us rare breed left, P platers with high powered cars. Im so glad I got my lisence before the law changed. Well, im not sure of QLD had/has that power to weight, power to litre rule...never herd of it, I havn't been pulled up once in the GTS since Ive had it anyway...Must be a sensible driver.

But, the cops should be aware of this rule ofcourse and therefore have a list of stock cars to keep an eye out for since they will be over the limits. For example, HSV's.
old rules:
125kws per tonne
3.5Litres per tonne
new rules
no turbos unless its diesel
no superchargers
no v8's
some 6cylinder cars are banned
and no performance mods allowed
The last one is pretty stupid. Technically, removing a resonator will get you dicked

its the 3.5 litres per a tonne if u got your P's before july 1st this year. And you will get caught, my brother had a 253 in his HQ on his P's and was constantly harrased by the coppers. 19 times in 2 weeks he was pulled over at one stage and he never drove like a tool either. They regularly made him pop the bonnet to make sure he wasnt lieing bout it being a 253 and on a few occasions they had to call in TMU or another copper to confirm it. Oh jsut for some comedy from memory he got pulled over 50 times in a year a half before he took action against the police (legal) and things started to settle down.
Cheers Tom
Drove for a year and a half in a Suzuki Vitaradrove it like a spastic everywhere, didnt get pulled up once! got a v8, pulled up prob 15 - 20 times in the last year. I was once doing 40 in a 50 zone and still got pulled up lol, i can remember they just stared as i rolled past and when i thought ey they arnt going to pull me up, LIGHTS, SIREN, breath test ow ur fine, can i see ur licence, ow whats this jack u dont have p'plates up *DOH* i pleaded with this woman cause that would have put me on 6 points. Noooooo its ur responsibility jack goodbye 3 months suspension or good behaviour!!!!!!
Heres the funny part 30 mins later i was going back the way i came down bell st and the same two cops pulled me up again! Its a bit of a story but i saw them pull over before me a vl, then a vn stats.
I know they are just doing their job but COME ON!!!! Random my ass! They know that if they pull up p's in old cars often enough there will be something wrong with there car or they will not have their p's displayed by accident eventually. How is that about keeping the roads safe?
The V8 is just icing on the cake when they go to town on ur holden/ford
High Powered Vehicle Restrictions
As part of Victoria’s new graduated licensing system, new restrictions on driving high powered vehicles will apply to all drivers who obtain their probationary licence after 1 July 2007.
The current power to weight restriction will continue to apply to any probationary driver who obtained their licence before 1 July 2007.
However, if a probationary driver with a pre-July 2007 licence has a car that does not meet the power to weight restrictions, but it does comply with the new high powered vehicle restrictions effective from July 2007, then the probationary driver may drive the car. (Somebody tell me how this is possible)
Probationary drivers who obtained their licence from 1 July 2007 will not be allowed to drive a vehicle with:
An engine of eight or more cylinders
A turbocharged or supercharged engine
Certain high performance six cylinder engines
An engine that has been modified to increase the vehicle's performance.
If they get caught driving any of these vehicles, they’ll have to pay a fine and you’ll receive three demerit points.
Vehicles excluded from these restrictions...
Turbocharged or supercharged diesel powered cars (without engine performance modifications)
Nominated vehicles with low powered turbocharged or supercharged engines, including Suzuki Cappucino 2D Cabriolet Turbo 3 cylinder 689cc, Daihatsu Copen L880 2D Convertible 4 cylinder 659cc
All models of the Smart car, produced by Mercedes Benz.
Vehicles driven as a part of the driver’s employment and at the request of the employer.
You could always try the old "it was only running on 6cyl when I bought it" but I doubt even the most mechanically inept cop is gonna beleive you!
You can drive a VN calais on the old rules (pretty sure) and for sure VQ's and all the later model Calais's. Apart from tthat your buggered, You can't drive a Executive 5 litre
My GTS states TARE 1400kg. So im over![]()
