    Default riddle me this

now, can some one answer this, ive been trying to figure this out for a little while now

ages ago they did soem core hole drilling on polar caps, analasis showed 3 times the amount of carbon in the air then as it is now.

when in it's form, carbon is simply identified as c
when in it's form oxygen is simply 0
when combined, carbon and oxygon make co2, carbon dioxide

the molecular structure of carbon is heavier than oxygon.

how can they claim that there is to much carbon in the atmosphere, it's to heavy to reach that far?

I'm a little confused, but if I understand you correctly

co is emitted by burning fossil fuels and is extremely reactive. In comparison to the weight of our atmospheric gases I believe it is quite light, (I think) even when combined with O from up high to form CO2 it is relatively light.

By volume our atmosphere contains something like 78% nitrogen, 20.95% oxygen, 0.93% argon, 0.038% carbon dioxide. (haven't checked the figures for accuracy, however they do sound ok). I have no idea about CO2, Methane level historical comparisons, as every second thing I read states something different. Consensus seems to be that human activity has increased these greatly, however I have seen some arguements which state the natural production of greenhouse gas vastly outweighs human output.

Not for or against the whole environmental push.

Your thoughts? Am I on the right tram here?

Components in Dry Air- Volume Ratio compared to Dry Air- Molecular Mass - M
    (kg/kmol) -Molecular Mass in Air
    Oxygen 0.2095- 32.00 -6.704
    Nitrogen 0.7809- 28.02 -21.88
    Carbon Dioxide 0.0003 -44.01 -0.013
    Hydrogen 0.0000005- 2.02 -0
    Argon 0.00933 -39.94 -0.373
    Neon 0.000018 -20.18 -0
    Helium 0.000005- 4.00- 0
    Krypton 0.000001- 83.8 -0
    Xenon 0.09 10-6 -131.29 -0
Total Molecular Mass of Air -28.97

Molecular mass in air says CO2 is far lighter than Nitrogen.

It's been far too long since I've done any study into molecular weights.

What exactly are you asking? Are you asking how there can be too much carbon in the atomosphere despote the fact that pure carbon cant actually float?

Carbon is too heavy to get into the air. Pure carbons natural form at STP is in fact graphite (so if you have a very long term investment in diamonds your gonna get screwed over in a few million years time when it turns back to graphite )

CO2 is a gas at STP. Its formed when carbon is heated and burned. The extra energy allows oxygen to grab hold of come of carbons electrons to make itself more stable

The CO2 molecule is non-polar and so unable to form into a solid hence being a gas despite being heavier then pure carbon on a molecule for molecule basis.

CO2 is also HEAVIER then pure nitrogen on a molecule by molecule basis. However as nitrogen is the main component of air its mass on a % base of air is far greater.

This is why CO2 is a green house gas and N2 isn't. CO2 is big and heavy and dense. It absorbs more heat energy and takes the bit longer to radiate it out.

I have no idea if i answered the question cos quite frankly im still not terribly sure what your actually asking (too tired to think straight enough sorry...)

It has been a long time, I admit-

but isnt CO2 formed when 02 is burned, the two atoms split and bond to a carbon forming CO which is unstable, hence bonding with another o when it hits ozone which is just o, hence the holes?

Off the topic but if I remember correctly C has 3 natural forms- graphite, diamond and what's the third?

Carbon is found free in nature in three allotropic forms: amorphous, graphite, and diamond. A fourth form, known as "white" carbon, is now thought to exist.

Its three main allotropes are graphite, diamond and amorphous carbon (coal etc... Any carbon compound not classified as Diamond or graphite basically).

Is 'white carbon' carbon nitride or something different?
