Thanks
Buy a repair/service manual and some tools....go from there. You can also learn lots from here, all ya gotta do is search for wat u need, if ya can't find it then ask.
I've learnt ALOT from car forums.
Alot of people learn from their Dad's by spending time in the shed etc etc as they're growing up....but me and my little bro had to learn everything ourselves coz our parents got a divorce 10 years ago and the old man moved to QLD. My little bro, Brad (or PEAKN6 on here) is 17 and he knows a hell of a lot more then most people his age. It's all from reading and stuffing around with everything, breaking stuff and learning from it....last year when we were both at school in the same automotive class, we always questioned the teacher, mainly to test his knowledge tho coz he knew stuff all haha, a lot of the time we corrected him.
If you've got the time, go buy an old clapped out commy with a 202 or sumfin, pull it to bits, see how it all works, just go over everything and have a good play. If ya stuff it up, try to fix it...and you'll start working it out!![]()

i started off like you man, go buy your self a basic socket set with everything from 10mm to 19mm sockets and a wrench, and buy a old car, and rip it apart, go to the wreckers and fix it up, only way to learn is get in there and do it your self, its easy once you do it a coupple of hundread times
then you get to a point where you can swap engines without even looking in a book in a matter of hours,
JC is a good place to ask questions, lots of smart blokes here
hey
im thinking about getting a old VN V6 Commo and taking that apart etc, i can get one for like $500
Some tafes do a night time car servicing course(dont know if they still do) which gives you the basics thats what i did a bout 10 years ago and then i left school and became a mechanic so that might be something to look into
haha, basically, as everyone else has said - just buy a manual, some cheap tools, and make it up as you goYou can't go wrong! (much).
When I bought my commodore, I could change a tyre... and that was about it. I couldn't even do THAT properly. Then in the 3mths the car was unregistered before I got it on the road, I just fiddled and screwed with it... you slowly build up confidence, and learn from your mistakes... you'll screw up - we all do. But the more you do, the better you'll get![]()
As you get onto more complex stuff, you'll need more specialised tools... I find I'm always acquiring more tools... but if you buy them as you need them, it's not quite such a financial hit. I've probably spent $500+ in tools to date. But I've saved thousands![]()
