    Wink Better Alternative than Night-Shades

Just wondering if theres a better alternative to tint my taillights, because quite frankly the product night-shades that comes in a aerosol can is crap and the finish is barely glossy. i was thinking of getting a small can of clear coat paint and tinting with small amount of black? is this possible and where can i get it done?

yes clearcoat and purple with a bit of thinners does the same job, its how i spray my tailights when they fade from being in the sun but i use red instead of purple

Get 500ml of 2K clear, some thinners and hardner. Then get the boys to add around 10 units (depends on what tint system they use) to the clear and apply around 3-4 coats.

I saw a tutorial a year or so ago on tinting tail lights. For the tutorial they used a 350z. But in a nutshell, they used the spraycan tint to cover the lights, then sand with very fine paper, then clear coat and polish it up. I'm not 100% sure tho coz it was ages ago I saw it. Maybe they just polished after the spray tint, then clear coat and another polish....can't remember exactly...but yeah put a clear coat on and polish it

    I wouldn't do it fullstop.

Down here in Melbourne, the coppers don't like it. But your in Sydney so yeah i'm not sure about up there.

I put heavy thick layers of the night shades tint on my old ones and it worked sweet as and was mega glossy. Just gotta take the lenses off and lay them flat on the ground so it doesn't run, then i put a light behind it, and layered that stuff on thick as hell. No runs and it looked great.

Cops defected me for the stuff though.

lmao, you layered it on 'thick as hell' and wondered why you got defected?

I put 2 'light' coats, plus a few coats of clear, and they have been fine for years, and cops don't even care (like they should anyway, tinting isn't illegal, as long as the lights perform the same)

Nah, i asked the copper why and he said any shades of that tint don't go down to well with the boys in blue.

It wasn't that dark, i used red globes / orange globes under the lenses, the light shone through great was really bright, but yeah they still don't like it and apparently, they don't see why it is needed in the first place.

But the can does say for offroad and show use.

My VR has 3 decent coats on the tail lights and no dramas here. As Stealthy said, it's not illegal as long as they still perform as required.

VHT actually does a product called spray on tint, the more coats you apply the darker it goes.

they do a lot of engine enamels, vinyl dyes and heatproof paints and such.

i find them to be a good brand. give em a try

im gonna use that if i decide to tint my tail lights, which is tempting.

Modifications to cars are allowed providing they don't breach the ADRs.

The specific ADR on performance or brake lights, AND more importantly tail lights (being a dimmer light) says as long as both can be seen clearly from 200 metres away, it is fine.

Now, my VL that i used 1 can per light (back in the younger days) still met these requirements, so putting a few light coats on is going to easily meet those requirements.

Its the same with anything you do, bigger wheels, suspension etc, all can be modified providing it still meets ADRs

The depressing thing about the defection system is that the cops dont have to prove its illegal, YOU have to prove its legal.

Its stupid imo. What happened to innocent before proven guilty?

I'm sure everyone agrees, even Helly and Viccop. Leaves the system open to abuse, and more often than not, thats what you get, a power tripping cop.

Thats why my argument in the other spool thread was so strong against the lokka, yeah there legal, but cops can still defect you for it.
