Default Things you can do with your full licence that you can't on P's?

I'm just about to get my full licence and I'm thinking of all the things I can do now, that I couldn't before.

    • Drink and drive (0.05)
    • Drive high powered vehicles
    • Rent cars (no-one rents to non full drivers, especially <21)
    • Display stupid P plates
    • Get targetted by cops
    • Drive a manual (for some)
    • Be allowed to accumulate more demerit points

Can anyone think of any other benefits? The main ones for me are being able to have a beer with a meal and be able to rent cars.

Most car places wont give you a rental unless you are 25, in fact almost all won't.

Hmm you can hire a car at some places now under 25, but they sting you an Age Excess daily fee.

It would be ok if I could use my gf's little brother as my designated driver, but there's really no point in me letting a learner drive my car (unless I want to actually teach him).

As for the car rental, I'm getting a campervan at the end of the year and just about every other car place is 21. Some have a $20 a day surcharge for "young" drivers (21-24), but oh well.

Although it is true for renting high performance cars and bikes. Monaro rentals and just about anything bigger than a 250, requires you to be 25. Not a problem I'll be running into when I'm renting a Corolla from Hertz though.

edit: Beat me to it.. Not everyone has an age surcharge, but in the rare instance I will be renting a car, it's not a huge deal.

You can't use learners as designated drivers any more as the passenger must be blow the legal limit as if they were control. When i was on my L's the law stated they must have a fully licensed driver, didn't say sober, alive, whatever, just a fully Licensed driver. I wonder why those laws were changed lol.

Yeah I know, that's why I said there was no point in me taking him. Everytime I went through a booze bus on my L's (I drove pretty much everyday from 16-18) the cop could never be bothered going around to my mum.

Out of quite a few times (all at night), my mum was only once asked to blow in the breatho.

The law still doesn't do anything about stupid "supervising" drivers who allow their kids to drive stupidly. A girl was caught about 30-40km/h over the limit, but cops couldn't find a charge for the mother, the learner copped it though.

The perfect punishment for the mother, having to drive her children around because they let them be idiots...haha 2 more years of suffering and nagging.

I dont think L platers really cop it, id say more road rage is directed at P platers and fully licensed drivers.

When i was on my Ls and i stuffed up, people would be understanding because im learning. But if you have your Ps its assumed your a semi capable driver. And if you have your full license and do something silly you cop it under what we call in my house the "you should know better" rule.

lol, i used to be the only P plater (fully liscenced for 2 years now) in a small town and i got blamed for everything, even though i never drove around, i drove to school/work and back and that's it, the local cop even said to me i know you did all those burnouts just out of town, even though i had an LSD, and they were all dirty big single leggers. and there was another car same as mine (when i had an EB wagon) they woman used to flog it everywhere and everyone thought it was me and i got hassled by the cop, he said he heard me leaving every morning at about 7.45am ( i suppose all the do gooders seen me too) i said can't be me i leave at 6.15am every morning, he went silent for a moment, and said oh that's just a near enough guess. yeah cause 1.5 hours is a minor difference, when it is the difference between light and dark. Damn P's they are a curse

You forgot the most important thing you can do off your P's, drive around without a P plate...

Over here you need to have a full licence for 5 years before you can instruct a learner.

How does getting a full licence affect you mentally??

I've heard people going wild and out after getting a full licence thinking they are free and then later copping a fine or gets in trouble.

I was just gonna bring that up. Here in SA the fully licenced driver must have held their full licence for atleast 2 years without any disqualifications b4 they can supervise a Learner.

We asked the transportSA mob here about it when I first went onto my full licence. The guy read through the rules and regulations and said it was ok....then asked another transportSA worker and they said the opposite.

But I've been my bro's licenced driver a few times, even tho I shouldn't be. Have stopped now tho coz he goes for his final lesson 2morrow, so don't really wanna get caught and have him loose his L's days b4 he gets his P's (even tho he's been busted b4 driving with no one, but they let him keep his L's, I just had to come and get the car coz they wouldn't let him drive it home lol.....I use to do the same thing but didn't get caught, I guess that's why he started doing it)

The difference being, don't you SA people get your full licences at 19 (assuming you get your P's as soon as you can and don't get any suspensions).

Here in Vic, we get our first drivers licence at 18 and hold onto it for 3 years, until it becomes a full licence at 21. It sucks, I'm less than two weeks away from 21, but I'm still just another bloody P plater.

As for the mental side, a common phenomena I've witnessed is that people will now drive to parties and say they'll only have two drinks and drive home. After that they start counting their drinks and finally don't even bother and end up staying over or sleeping in the car.

Whereas, on their P's they would've found a lift there or shared a cab or something.

Also, driving without a licence is stupid, not only for the legal aspect, but for how it can screw up your life. If your brother caused an accident, he would be liable for all damages out of his own pocket. A 15 year old kid being stuck with an indexed $50,000 debt, that he has to pay off is not the ideal way to start your life.

In WA we get our P's at 17, and hold them for 2 years, then were full licence, though to take a L, we need to wait another 3 years, like not_an_abba_fan mentioned

Queensland is different in a lot of things they do. Even their number plates are backwards.

Hehe, yep. The new laws state that anyone who obtains their Provisional license after JULY 07 has to display the Plates, since I got mine 2 yrs before that rule I don't have to. Its really weird seeing all these P plates up here now, I see the P plates then look at the number plates to see NSW, VIC or another state, then I see QLD plates and realize how lucky I am to be driving a V8 and not displaying my P plates, yep, I got it easy.

I guess so, I got my L's about 2 weeks after I turned 16, then I had them for 2 years (lazy), got my P's when I was 18, and got my full licence about 3-4 months ago.

Yeah I agree, but when ya that age ya don't think about the consequences. My bro was only driving out the salt flats tho, which we live right next to. He use to go out there a lot and just thrash around the tracks in his VH wags...the only reason he got caught was coz a cop got a call out coz there was a heap of motorbikes around the area, so the cop went and had a suss, and he sat and watched my bro for a bit then decided to nab him lol.

I remember that when I was up there visiting my Dad a few years ago. I'd drive him around, and not having to put up my L plates I thought was wicked....altho now I see it as dangerous really, so it's a good thing they've changed it. It's good to let the other road users know that ur a learner, so they can keep their distance etc etc.

Well with L plates they brought them in just as I was going for my P's, so roughly early 2005 they brought in the L plates and then in July 07 they brung in the P plates and Vehicle restrictions, Yeah Its good to have them, I don't see a big deal if I had to use them, unless ofcourse one fell off or got stolen then I got fined....
