    Question Minimum Wage...

I was talking to my gf about pay etc. today as she never seems to have that much money despite working all week...

Now she works Wednesday to Sunday full time hours (9-9 on thurs, 7-5 sat and 9-5 the rest) yet she gets almost $100 a week less than me and I only work 25 hours a week now (im full time uni).

She's 18, works in retail, is a CASUAL employee too (although her hours are permanent) and she earns just over $10 an hour.

I know the minimum wage for adults (21) is $13.74 an hour for full and part time, about $16.50 for casuals.

So can anyone tell me, or link to a site that can give me the details on minimum wage for 18 year olds? It doesnt have to be in SA im just after a rough estimate.

is she claiming the tax free threshold? if she isnt she could be getting taxed heaps and end up with less in the pocket at the end of the week.

I'm a casual on $12.63 an hour (I'm 20 at the moment). I do a days work and get just over $100. My boss is wicked tho....he lets me use the workshop(panel/spray shop) basically for anything I want (in return for a few hours of free work), ya can't ask for much more then that.

The new minimum wage for an adult is $13 something. Did your gf sign an agreement or what? Cause that's where you will find it. If she didn't, she needs to see what it says on her letter of offer. If it states award, she should be paid under the terms and conditions of that award until the 3 year "workchoices" transitional arrangements cease which is next year some time... Then its $13 and only 5 other minimum conditions. Unless she can manage to negotiate something better. Usually this goes something along the lines of; boss" want the job?" gf "yes" boss " here is the agreement, take it or leave it".

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news dude.
I quoted the 2007 rates from the Australian Fair Pay Commission's 2007 Minimum Wage Decision (13.74).

She's been working there for a year now so not sure what she has or hasn't signed but will ask tomorrow.

Hey man, cheers. I already checked the fairpay commission site which is where I got the minimum wage rates, but failed to find anything for 18 year olds, just Adult (21) rates and the rest were traineeships/apprenticeship rates.

I'll check the other one now though

When I was last working I was largely underpaid, $6 an hour it worked out to be, even though I was on an Award Wage. $300 a week I was pulling in, as there was no tax. I didn't have to sign anything at all, all cash in hand. Very very dodgy IMO

I fail to see what the problem is.

She is 18, more than likely unqualified, and works in retail.

I remember when I was a uni student, I was getting around $12 an hour casual when I was 20.

Can't really expect any more than that I'm afraid.

Yeah I think your on the money (no pun intended). I don;t think she would be earning much more in a similar shop Dylan, its just the way it is.

it all depends on the industry you work in, to how much u get per hour, week, etc...

im a baker, so im on a good wager.
but i know a few retail people, and they arnt on good money.they sit on abt $9-$11.50 for a casual, part time basis.
But still ring wageline, and see what they say.
dont worry, il start a ride thread soon.

But she could be working at macca's, KFC, or HJ's and be getting paid like $4 an hour more.

She is getting paid HALF my BASE rate and im only 20, also working in retail.

If it were part time or permanent $10 wouldn't be such a big deal... But casual positions should have atleast a 20% loading over part time and permanent pay rates.

So why doesn't she just up and go somewhere else?

She has to chase the money, its not going to come to her.

If she is getting above minimum wage then I have no issue (neither does she).

But im pretty sure she is being paid UNDER the minimum wage, which is illegal. And i'd rather my gf gets paid a decent rate for something she wants to do.

Hmm yeah well thats different if the boss is underpaying her.

Everybody wants to get paid a decent rate for what they want to do, but in reality its not going to happen if you are working at the bottom of the pile. I'd love $250 an hour for what I do, but at the moment I don't have the experience or skills to ask that so I gotta put up with what I have until I do. The same applies for everyone else I would imagine.

That would be the aim, but i'd like to find out the minimum wage for a casual in her position so that she has something to ask for (hence thread)... Also its hard for an employer to deny someone the minimum wage.

I don't think $13-$14 an hour for a casual employee is unrealistic though.

She'd be happy with her pay rate if was given a permanent position as well, atleast giving her sick leave and holiday pay.
