Default repainting rims - HELP ME PICK A COLOUR!

    hey guys,

my 17" rims were on the calais when it got smashed up, now 3 of them got scuffed up, and 2 badly...

ive started sanding them.. so far ive got all the scratches out of 1 rim, the other ones arnt so bad but yeah,

im repainting them my self as it would cost more to get them sprayed in a shop than a new set of rims..

soo down to it, my cars alaskan white, im thinking a metallic grey, but i dunno id like to go darker, anyone know any good tech on spraying rims? special kinds of paint to use etc any techniques..

but yeah im open to suggestions on rims..

make put a perl into the paint for a extra effect at night? ive still got some blue perl left over from my engine bay i can mix up... also good idea to mix clear into the paint then sand with 1500-2000grit + water for a good finish?

ive got all the required spray gear and a top loader spray gun

as you have probably sanded through their coating already - make sure you etch prime them with one suited for alloy rims,

if your painting metallic then sand with freaking fine paper as metallic flakes tend to sit in swirl marks and end up looking crap

but apart from that just be carful when your painting as with all the different angles on wheels its easy to put too much paint on the edges and curves - you end up with big sexy runs lol

Why don't you post up a side on pic of your car and a list of colours and get people to photoshop it for you.

I'd say it'll look pretty good in very very dark grey similar to gun metal grey. Black may look ok too.

What about the paint that turns different shades at different angles. Could be a real head turner.

no white they were shaddow chrome,

i like the idea of charchol etch primer you say?
but polished sanded would look awesome i think

i didnt have a choice to sand thru the primer, had to get the deep scratches out, they will need rebalancing

just gave it a final sand, got the surface really smooth (started on 1 rim to see how it looks, used the worse damaged rim)

    heres a few pics

where would i get em powder coated?

and how much does it cost?

as for the sanding they're comming up really nice in terms of skuff removal, i like the design of them just the paint was too bad to bear, flaking all over the place

Yea you need to etch then on the bare metal - or your normal primer may not stick to it for too long,

we used to paint brand new horse floats - a co worker forgot to etch it before priming and it came back 3 weeks later bare alloy again lol

powdercoating may be a better idea - it lasts a bit longer and you can get alot more shine out of it - + can get it to almost look like polished alloy and get coloured dyes put through it

It'd almost be worth just paying for new rims at $200 a pop at that price.

I had mine powder coated for $50.

I too was under the impression it costs ****loads, then thought, i'll go down there and find out what i'm going to be up for.

$50 per rim to be sent away and acid bathed, then powder coated. You'd spend more getting pressure packs almost. I assume you'd have to pay more if theres tyres still on the rims, but hey, $200 is a bargain.

Obviously i'm in Adelaide, so they probably will be useless for you (unless your driving over lol) but the place is called Steve Wicks and sons

They sent the wheels to a seperate place to be acid bathed, which was covered in the cost (but he did say if they had to bath them twice, it would be more, but mine weren't). Mine are 18s, but i just gave him all 4 wheels in the boxes, and a few weeks later they were done (he did them first, but the paint was a **** batch, so he said wait another week and he'll redo them with the new paint so he's happy with them)

Also photoshops are pointless, heres the photoshop and real pic, miles of difference between them.
