What are everyones thoughts? I've had a quick read around the forums this morning and I've found nothing but negative comments towards it.. With exception to a very small minority that do it mainly for their kids.
Most seem to hate the idea because Australia is becoming too Americanised, they don't want to celebrate Halloween simply because its an American tradition.
I really don't understand. I have managed to read some other comments about it, getting a sense of community back, it seems to be lacking of late. My neighbourhood is a close neighbourhood, frequent street parties and 1 large street party each year for our Christmas party.
It's a neighbourhood where you would not feel bad trick or treating, or knocking door to door because you know everyone.
I'm just curious as to why people are so negative towards something that they don't seem to understand the meaning behind.
we normally go to the halloween thing at movie world. last year was our 1st time and our daughter was only 6 months old,we had the best time and we were planning on going again this year but i had to come to sydney at the last minute. we will definately be going next year. if our daughter has a good time and we have a good time thats all that matters, people dont do enough family activities nowdays and if it gets the whole family involved then why not.
lol i had a bunch of little kids knocking on my door trick or treating last night, gave them a box of ice blocks to share between them...i tell you it made my night seeing them all dressed up out having fun...i used to do it when i was younger (for the sole purpose of getting free stuff) brought back a few memories
i'd like to see it happen here in OZ, my old girl is in the states at the moment and she was jsut saying out on the vegas side it's not really a big thing but on the LA side it's huge even the parents get involved.

Thanks....... haha
used to do it when i was young around the neighbourhood with all the kids on the street. A few kids came to my door last night and i felt heaps bad coz all I had were those natural confectionary citrus thingos. Will be prepared next year!
We had a few kiddies come over last night, we had lollies rdy, I forgot we had this fully scary mask and wanted to scare them with it.
Don't like it at all, its an American thing. My daughter wanted to go trick or treating and we wouldn't let her. It goes against everything kids learn about stranger danger- never talk to strangers, don't accept lollies or anything from strangers. We had a lot of kids come around yesterday, we knew one of them so the rest were strangers to us, most not even from our street. Kids don't even know the measning of halloween except for they get to dress up and scab lollies.
I bought my kids some lollies yesterday so they didn't feel like they were missing out and my daughter had a fancy dress mufti day at school yesterday so that will do her.
Well im opposed to it cause its american and is just plain stupid sometimes, ive seen groups of 4 year olds running around doing it!
Although my neighbourhood is close to being ghetto, halloween this year, three different weirdoes tryed to abduct kids!!! And one was a P-Plater :S
I'd never let my kids do it.
cheers
i did it for a couple of years with the other kids on the street ( when i was one too ) i thought it as alright back then cos we all got heaps of lollies!
We got rep back, yaaay!
The worst part is that hardly anyone knows the meaning behind it and are just out for the lollies. Half the kids we had last year didn't even dress up!
Selling FG G6E Turbo and buying a N/A Supra
I dont know the meaning behind it and i dont care. i agree, it's just a dumb american tradition.
Yer, for me Halloween this year was an excuse to dress up and get ****eda woman i know put on a Halloween Party at Earth the nightclub, was pretty good
But just outta interest I looked up the 'true meaning' of Halloween and apparently:
"People would paint or carve scary faces on gourds and turnips and disguise themselves in outlandish costumes to scare away the evil spirits that were also thought to be wandering the earth that night."
Taken from: True meaning of Halloween - Features
Though when looking it up there are also the crazies that are like 'Beware! Satan is trying to recruit you!' lol
when it gets us a public holiday, i'll happily embrace it!!!
as for the concept of it, i don't like the idea going around to strangers and getting gifts off them, within family and friends maybe, but randoms? no thanks

It's thoughts like this, that made me start the thread. If you don't know about something why would you call it a dumb american tradition. I even stated in my original post that it's not originally from America.
So technically your not wrong. But I think writing it off as an American tradition and not doing it because its american is slightly stupid.
I don't see what's wrong with taking your kids around your neighbourhood getting treats, it does go against stranger danger. But if you are there and they realise it only happens one night a year, and because you are there with them, whats the problem with that?
it annoys me, the missus followed a van home on halloween night from a neighbour hood thats 20mins away on the motorway, when they got to our neighbour hood the ystopped at the side of the road and droped the kids of to go door knocking. off all the people that knocked on our door we only recognised 2 children from our neigbour hood. most weren't even in costume and a few were bordering on rude.
we took our kids to an organised "fright night" at a local place, $10pp and was entertaining too.
next year i will have a "halloween free zone!!" sign on our door as many of our neighbour had this year. i don't mind doing it for hte local kids but refuse to do it for all the other scabs around. i choose to live where i do cause i want to get away from those people and pay a small fortune to do so and they still ruin it.
