Hi All, This for people who knows computers and networks n' stuff...
We have two computers at home connected to a wireless ADSL router (Belking) and both access internet with no problems. Both pc's are approx 6 metres from the router and connection was never an issue. Both running XP Pro.
The problem is - that both computers will not 'talk' to each other!! I have set some of the folders to 'shared and the other computer won't see it and vice versa..
Can't even connect in a multiplayer game even if one of them host the game.
Both computers have the same wireless network card installed.
This is what I have done so far on both PC's:
- Enabled File and printer sharing
- Turned off the windows firewall and McAffee firewall (Made no difference)
- Pinged both computers and recieved no ping on the other PC
- There is no IP address conflict
- The router act as a DNS server (Don't know whether this affects it)
- Both on TCP/IP protocol
- Both on the same workgroup named "MSHOME"
- Broke my keyboard because of the frustration involved
Anything else I need to do to get them to love each other????
Any help greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance.....
Attaboy.
now for a meaninful post..
make sure both computers are part of the same domain/workgroup
Ok a few things to try,
Firstly start by giving both machines a set IP Address.
eg:
(router) = 192.168.0.1 (most likely depending on model / brand)
say PC1 = 192.168.0.2
say PC2 = 192.168.0.3
your IP addresses will need to be in the same range,
For example
If your router is 192.168.0.xx then the rest of your network will need to be in this range.
If your router IP Address is 10.0.0.xx then your IP addresses will need to be in the 10.0.0.xx range.
Next Make sure that both machines have a meaningful name and are under the same workgroup / domain name.
Make sure you have some folders shared on both computers.
The first thing you need to do is actually get both computers to be able to talk (ping) first before trying to get the sharing folders / files happening.
Also check your firewall settings as these can block communications.
You can also open a command prompt window (START --> RUN --> Type CMD and Press Enter)
in the Command window you can type IPCONFIG and press enter.
this will give you your current IP Config settings

To holdensupporter2005, thanks for your excellent post I will try it. And post back soon.
( To Azzfox - Both computers are on the same workgroup named MSHOME )
P.S Where do I get the DNS address of my ISP??? (iprimus) Would it be in the modem control panel??
DNS Settings for Iprimus are on this page Primus Support - Windows XP - Manually assigned DNS
Preferred DNS Server: 203.134.64.66
Alternate DNS Server: 203.134.65.66

In regards to file sharing, if you can't access the other computer via workgroups also try accessing the computer directly via its IP.
In explorer, if the ip is 192.168.0.2 for example you'd put it as
\\192.168.0.2
If you can access it that way, you can go into windows\system32\drivers\etc\
Edit the file called hosts in notepad and add a line like this
192.168.0.2 computername
where 192.168.0.2 is obviously the IP, computername can be changed to anything you want and it can then be accessed by doing \\computername
As for not being able to access the other computer for games etc. Chances are both computers don't have your router set as the primary DNS server, which means they'll look at your ISP DNS first when dealing with hostnames.
Thanks for the replies guys, when I get home from work I will do what you guys suggested and will post back ASAP.
again, thank you..
