Me and my mate were playing 8 ball today and we were both on the black. I took my shot and the whiteball went in before the 8 ball. Does this mean i still won?
No, you lose. A foul cannot be committed when pocketing the 8 ball. Even if the 8 ball went in first, you still lose.
even if you dont sink the black, you still loose if you sunk the white off the black.
Power is measured in DECIBEL
cheers fellas
There is about 1 million different sets of rules going around. Usually starts fights a fight in the pub.
Me and a mate were playing for 20 bucks against these two geezers who tried to take two shots on the black. I said since when, 1 shot on the black only - thats one rule i thought everyone played. we flipped a coin in the end easier then arguing. and lost.

Yeh I have had people say two on the black. We had some b*stards one day tell us we had to always have the white ball hit the cush at one stage during a shot. I heard this is a competition rule? But it was a casual game in a bloody pub for f**ks sake. I should probably just look up the rules one day.
World 8Ball Rules
So yes a ball does have to touch the cush. But PUB RULES!
The cue ball or the ball you are hitting, but only if it doesn't sink.
Having just browsed the rules, I can't see anywhere that it says you can't have two on the black. So I would say yes, two on the black as well.
Every pub/club I've worked in has been two shots on black if the other person(s) still have balls on the table, if both are on the black then it's one shot
It's usually open to some interpretation, much like the shooting backwards rules
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?
there are also different rules per different state, when i go to my cousins house in wagga(nsw), if you foul the opposition gets 2 shots but here in canberra there is only one shot after a foul. might have to source some rules from a pub or club, might clear alot of things up.
Even the international rules are different depending on where you read them. Our rules are one shooter and one shot for every foul and your opponent gets to choose the shooter.
Just had a thing about this on a different forum. Same deal though the chick sunk the white, and the guy went to take two shots and she stopped him after he took his first shot.
It's a foul, so you get a free shot. No matter what ball your on.
Pet hate of mine is turning up and playing a few games with some people, pubs or random games, only to foul on the black, or miss completely only to have the other person celebrate. Foul on the black, loss of game. What drugs are you on?
Only rules I follow are, you can't shoot backwards. I think the rule is that the cue ball has to go across the line of the D. Can't remember though.
That depends when the foul was committed. The set of rules I have says that the cue ball only has to be put behind the head string (D) if a foul is committed on the break. Any other time the cue ball can be put anywhere on the table.
Just had a quick look and read the same thing. I think that sucks a bit. I knew they did it in 9 ball but it seems like a strange thing to add to 8 ball. Looks like I might have to start endorsing it though. Ball in hand just makes it easier for me.
as Happy Gilmore once said:
"Whoa, you're confusing me. Just let me put the ball in the hole."
..of course he was playing golf but you get the idea![]()

This is how I play.
No shooting back. Two shots on all but the black. If you sink the white shooting for the black you lose. If you sink the white and the black you lose. I play whatever rules are the house rules. e.g. when I played in Sydney it's one shot on fouls not two, so that's what I play. Best way to sort it out is before you start, sort out the rules with your competitor. Once the game starts they can't change the rules.
This is how me and my buddies play:
- 2 shot penalties except when on the black
- White and black ball in is a loss
- White ball in on the black is not a loss just a penalty
- Sunk white ball means 2 shot with the white to be placed anywhere behind the line as long as you don't shoot backwards
- Get different coloured balls in off of the break and you get to chose which one you want
yada yada yada
same here except for 2 minor differences...
white and black in, depends on teh order. white first=win, white last = lose
and get 2 colours in off break = you take first down and give penalty shots. I think thet's pretty standard rules in my area, but if all else fails follow house rules set by the establishment
