Racing hoons face tougher penalties
December 4, 2007 - 7:27AM
Car hoons in NSW will face jail terms if they rack up more than one conviction for offences including dangerous driving and performing burnouts and doughnuts, the state government said.
Under the new laws fines for street racing and aggravated burnouts or doughnuts will be increased up to $3,300 and hoons can be stripped of their licences for up to 12 months.
Car owners and parents will also be punished if their car is the one used by the convicted driver.
The legislation will provide for the car to be confiscated and used in crash tests if it is involved in three offences over a period of five years.
Announcing the laws, NSW Police Minister David Campbell said offenders caught a second time will face a prison term of up to nine months.
"These are tough measures aimed at stopping very dangerous and moronic behaviour on NSW roads," Mr Campbell said in a statement.
"Car hoons would not only face losing their vehicles but also their liberty, with jail terms of up to nine months for repeat street racing and burnout offences."
Under current laws, hoons can be jailed only if their second offence is more serious - such as colliding with another car or injuring a person.
Police will be given the power to strip licences on the spot and offenders can be taken off the road for 12 months.
"Not only are we increasing penalties but we're tightening the laws so hoons can't get their cars back because they need their vehicle for things such as work."
The anti-hoon package also includes a wheel clamping program, where cars are immobilised and dumped in their yard at home.

I hope its like that in Vic.
Another sad day for NSW hoons, lucky I live in QLD. LOL.
When will they learn this wont actually help
There's an old saying- push a pig up hill and you will be pushing all day and never get to the top. But pull its tail and it will run by itself.
Yeh I understand the drag racing part but the burnout part.... Youve got to be kidding.... 9 months jail for spinning the wheel.... sad sad sad. What about that cop doing dougnuts on youtube? I dont suppose he will be going to jail?
Thats why I love this state, couldn't imagine living elsewhere, lol.He was from WA, so no he won't be in this kind of trouble

So you go to jail for doing a skid in carpark, yet the people who stole my car and most likely many more cars with mine, are still out the stealing cars, and when they get caught they get slap on wrist and do it again.
Australia. Love it or leave it
Its not that, its entirely up to discretion of police... they can say whatever they want and itll stick, why? cos no one listens to teenagers or the youth in general.
These laws mark a serious issue of the government not knowing jack **** about anything. Kids having been doing stupid **** for the entirety of the human race and its not going to get any better. You take drag racingout of it and kids will find somehting else to do.. its like gy-forks (sp?) That used to be fun until some stupid ****ers got it banned (ok alot of stupid people) The mentality of peopl in power is to make rules and law and just expect it to curb behaviour.
The idea that "i need it for work" being banned is rediculas! "But it will force kids to think about there actions before they do it" BULL****! No it wont, why? people dont think like that, not up until 23 y/os anyway (excuse the random age group, im not sure when it stops) If we stopped and thought about everything we did all the time then the world would be a very very boring place... hmmm maybe i shouldnt by a nice car incase its ruined, maybe i shouldt buy a house incase it gets burned down, maybe i should buy an invertsment property incase i have bad tennants and then loose money in a court case, lets sit around leke vegetables.
Leaving people without a job isnt such a good idea atm anyway... we dont need to start an unemployment issue aswell... public transport is packed enough as it is right now. Not to mention the fact that crowding gaols isnt the best idea either.. Seems to be a comon theme with the government... lets put all the bad things in one place and hope they learn! GOALS dont work... Dont get me wrong though, gaols are good for those who kill etc.. fare enough, but burnouts dont constiture gaol time...
It revolves around the term: midguided youth... we (as i am one) need to stop being force fed rules and start having our needs (ie fun) curbed into safe enviromnts ie. Legal Drag races!
The government wants to stop hoon behaviour? Start thinking and stop waving parlamentary motions and laws... Build more race tracks and burnout pads, provide entertaimnet for youths that actually reflects what they want to do. Gets want to feel speed and get the adrelalin pumping, make it happen and youll statr seeing some respect from them.
Respect comes from it being given, you cant force respect.. it MUST be earnt, naval cadets tought me that. To be a leader you have to 1. Trust in your subordinants. Whats an army without soldiers? and 2. Have them Trust in you. You do that by making solid decisions which reflect the best interests for everyone.
This is bull****, im really upset about this. It doesnt even affect me however i feel that this seems to be the way that australia seems to be heading, i mean it even happens on here sometimes with nazi moderators. Just having power doesnt mean that you can make laws and have them stick... you need the people to understand why they are good for them... These laws arnt good for anyone other than the government.
Dont give me that innocent people getting killed with drag racing crap... More people die with old people having accidents than youth related drag racing... Burnout dont even contribute to road tolls... ****, i drop skids all the ****ing time and i havnt killed anyone, never will either as i dont even see how its possible! unless you did a burnout inside a packed room of people who cant walk...
I have some flights owing to me from getstar and itll get me to NSW and back so if anyone is will to protest this with a march of some type.. let me know and ill be the first(well figure of speech) to try and help out.
The government and authority need to be shown quite simply, YOU CANT FORCE PEOPLE TO DO THINGS THEY DONT WANT TO DO, CURB BEHAVOUR WITH RESPECT.. NOT JUST POWER!

Mate of mine in a Vk did accidentally break traction- I know it was accidental because he was the one always conserving tyres. Picked a poor place to do a 3 pointer and traffic was coming, panicked a little and dropped into drive with a few revs while turning nearly at lock facing uphill from a slight camber.
At the time got done for excessive noise because the boys in blue believed there couldnt possibly be any way that it could have been accidental, even though it was for a very short time- long enough for him to realise and back off. And it would have looked like the lamest burnout ever. Funny to think back and realise that now he would have been labelled a hoon when he was the tamest out of all of us.

They need to be increasing penalities for theft... not reducing it! What more time to come after us "hoons" real crimes for ****s sake... like oh i dont know... murder oh and the major issues of scum bag internationals (the gangs in clayton) and them actually assulting police.

Funny u mention that, they have/are bringing in another law that car theifs will only be given an on the spot fine rather than jail time. This is to save on paperwork which is good (give cops more time) but the penalties arnt very harsh.......)

Better then sending them to court and having the lean magistrates give em suspended sentences, or a fine which isn't even the same value as a Criminal Infringement Notice. Also your wrong a CIN would not be issued for a crook stealing a car, only for access to a boat/vehicle not actually stealing it.
****ing oath!! i dont condon hoon driving but there is a s*** load of better ways to spend police man hours other than pinging someone for doing a skid.
BUT i also think anyone who does burnouts in the suburbs should have to clean it off the road if they get busted. i remember when i was in school and we all got our cars (ford lasers, pulsars, civics etc) one bloke had a VR and we all drove up to this old quiet road in the middle of the sticks and watched him do burnouts. the car was jacked up changing tyres and the cops drove up to us, put down their windows and said, 'atleast your up here doing it' and told us to go home.
no longer a hoon by association - the commodore is gone
no joke hey.
i think he saw 15 of us, 5 cars and just thought bugger this man. cos there would have been sooooooooo much paperwork lol
