Coming from someone who is involved with the RSPCA, I advise you to stay away from pet shops and all backyard breeders/trading post. They're evil. Go to you local pound or if your in Sydney, the Yagoona shelter of the RSPCA. Why? You go to a breeder or pet shop you will pay up to $1100 and what you get for your money is vacinated (and sometimes) vet checked. Go to the RSPCA or pound and you'll pay around $220 and you'll get vacinated, full vet check, microchipped and desexed. Plus you'll also save the life of an animal that may not have had things so good. As the saying goes "Why breed and buy while others die" Be careful when picking a breed of do too. Don't get a Lab, Husky, cattle, rottie or any big breed. Your better off with something like a Maltese or similar. I'm sorry to hear that your girlfriend is sick but in all seriousness, who will care for the dog if, god forbid, your girlfriend is unable too? A dog will live for around 12 to 15 years. I see animals being surrendered at the shelter for the dumbest reasons. Reasons like "He barks", or "he licks too much". The dumbest of all "My son became alergic to our dog are 10 years". WTF! Five minutes later I saw those people out in the kennels wanting to buy another dog. Sorry if I seem like I'm preaching but I just want people to know what they get themselves into when buying a dog. Anyone who has a dog should treat it like they would any other family member otherwise don't have one.

Below is a pic of our 2 dogs after they just woke up. Bed hair! One on the left was being fostered by my wife from the RSPCA because she has a broken leg. One on the left was found 3 years ago wandering the streets of Bankstown and my wife and her sister saved him from the pound an hour before he was due to be put down. "Nana nana nana Leb dog"!

Car theives should be treated just like horse theives and cattle rustlers in the days of the wild west... Hang them!
Don't be stupid. Power isn't measured by the size of your tacho
im from campbelltown, i know there is an RSPCA joint up near the bankstown-Reagents park area.
go for a lil maltese terrier or alike, they dont grow very big and are great for indoor pets
thanks for all the help. i will go to the yagoona shelter and see if they have any puppies there. Also if my girlfriend becomes sick i will take the dog on. not sure if my border collie would like that thoughthanks again
just called yagoona and the only small dogs they have are Australian terriers.
God bless the RSPCA but generally the people that work behind the counter are idiots. There's heaps of terriers but also lots of other small breeds. Look on the adoptapet website. adoptapet

This may sound insensitive, so I apologise first.
The incurable disease, I take it it is terminal? Depending on the prognosis, get a dog that you like too, after your girlfriend passes, you will have it.
mhhm yes well the only reason im thinking about it is that for the past year or so she has been hospital free and so the dog would be looked after. and yeah im not going to take the dog for a walk. being the fact it will only come up to my ankle lol. and also i would look like a poof. but if she does pass away the dog will always remind me of her.
Couldn't have put it better myself, i am a supervisor for a veterinary wholesaler and our big boss is a veterinary surgeon and has been for 35 years now, and we are heavily associated with the RSPCA as they are our biggest customer, we run programs and heavily promote animal adoption, we have managed to save hundreds of dogs and cats from being put down over the last few years, it feels awesome to know that we are saving life's!

You also find smaller dogs are dependant on human interaction.
On the subject of the RSPCA telling you they have only Australian terriers, I suggest if your serious then go have a look for yourself rather than relying on the work of someone at the counter. They currently have a tonne of small dogs from Jack Russells to chihuahuas to maltese cross' and others. If you have a dog of your own already you can take them along and see if they get along in the socialising area before deciding.

Spot on with the leaving a dog by itself situation, this may sound silly but it's very very true, a dog can suffer severe problems or possibly death from lonelyness.
Yes it sounds silly, but it's a very real problem, they desperately want to get out from their backyard, they run around barking and going beserk, they do it enough and it sends them loopy, they get stressed, it can kill them.
And that doesn't just mean throwing a ball around the backyard for half an hour, they need to be able to see other dogs and have a sniff and a bark and a play, they actually have social schools for dogs at some vets on the weekends, it's almost like a training thing as well, but more of a social thing in a controlled enviroment, it's really good for them.
Imagine how buggered in the head a baby would be when it was older if it was raised by itself for it's whole life and never socialised with any other kids.
Who gives a toss if people think you are a poof? If they think that because someone is walking a small dog, they are actually more stupid than you think you may LOOK.
