Default dealer yards and trade in's??

    hey all,
wanna get rid of the vt and basicially downgrade to a vr calais 5l, but it's at a dealer yard, question is...how will the dealer go with doing a tradein on a cheaper car...ie will they do it or will they not bother due to having to give me the differance?

    cheers all

dealers will never give back what's your car is worth. You are better off selling it privately.

Yeah, you're better off selling the VT privately, then paying cash for the VR.

Dealers have offered me $10,000 for my VY with 105,000k's on it....Very clean etc.... So they will probably swap you for it, that's it... they are always looking for the bargain to buy and to rip off the buyer!!

    a few questions:

1)How much are they asking for the VR?
2)How much do you want for the VT?
    3)Whats your reason for downgrading?

Yeah i agree with whats been said here, car yards are looking for a profit, so they will want to offer you less than what they can sell it for. They will probally do a straight swap, but you would get more out of it, if you sold it privately, buy the Calais, you would probally get it for around 4 grand and have enough money to do some fixing up of various problems that its bound to have or perhaps do some modding.

as said car yards are a business and they want to make money

you are better off selling your vt private and going in with cash as u will probably get a better deal if u walk in with cash...

lol i dont think u would get anything more then 5k for your vt off the dealership.

Last year my dad was about to trade in his VX Berlina for the VE Berlina but got offered 7K!!!! The car only done 50,000ks. So he decided to sell it privately and got 13K for it.

    So again, sell it privately.

ofcourse car yards are going to rip you off with a trade in, they gotta make money somehow. i still remember when i was very young i had a VP for my first car and at one stage i saw this pretty nice VK 5L in the paper at a dealers in sydney.
so drove in there with the idea that i could trade my VP (which id bought about 6months earlier for almost $9k, it was a VERY nice car) towards this VK which he was asking $4500 for.
i knew i wouldnt get what the VP was worth but i thought at the very least i could do a straight swap.
anyway, i get in there and i look at the VK, it "looks" ok from a distance and it sounded really nice, but when you start really going over it there were lots of little bits that needed work and it quite frankly was overpriced. for some reason i still wanted it, lol, but after the bloke takes about a 2sec look in the direction of my car....seriously, didnt even pop the bonnet or look inside it, or check the k's, nothing. he says, trade mine in plus $1k and i can have the VK.
wtf?! i thought he was ****ing with me, but he was dead serious, he thought that was a good deal, me giving him my car and a grand and i could have a less than perfect VK worth maybe $3k when priced appropriately. needless to say i had a good laugh at him and said seeya later, in short caryards suck...dont rip yourself off by going to one.

My Mum recently bought a 93 Pajero for 5k from a car yard, they weren't interested in trading in her VX. (They're a Ford dealership, so they mainly sell new cars anyways)

A few years ago I saw a VH at the same car yard out the back. They wanted like $800. I took it for a thrash and when I went back I asked him how low they would go. It was a 173 5spd and it went alright. They said $500....I said I'd take it for $200 coz it's pretty rough and it had a bad oil leak....so bad that about every metre on the road was a drop of oil where I had driven, not a small drop either.....but yeah they wouldn't accept it. I was heart broken, I loved that car...and being on Youth Allowance with no job ment I would of been pushin to give them $200 at the time haha

It's funny how many people think car yards are only in it rip people off. We are in business to make money. As to the value of something, it is only worth what someone else is prepared to pay. If we get top dollar for a car, then it is worth that amount to the person who bought it. Do you try and barter the price down in the supermarket? How about a petrol station? Some industries it is a given that negotiating will take place, and the seller will always try for the highest possible price while the buyer will strive for the lowest.

As said, you will never get the retail value when trading in because the yard still has to sell it, you will only ever get the wholesale value. It would be unfair to expect a premium price for a trade in and pay a discounted price for the new car. If you want top dollar, sell it privately if you can afford to wait.
