    Default dodgy jack

i was jacking up my mates car today with the standard jack that came with my vz. half way thru jacking it up it collapsed. the nut had stripped. the car i was jacking up was only a vw golf so its some 300ish kg's lighter than my car. wtf. how could that have happened to a jack that is used on a vz ute and even the statos

never really had any issues with the couple of different diamond jacks i've used, must of had a dud jack somewhere along the line, thankfully it didn't pop while you had the wheel off

out of curiosity, were you jacking a cornerish or more to the center of one side?

That's lucky that it collapsed while the wheel was still on.

I don't trust any jack with anything. Diamond jacks, trolley jacks... the second the car is up, it goes on 3000kg stands, and the jack comes out. And then I throw tyres under the car, just in case the stands give. You can never be too careful - especially if you're crawling under the bastard.

But yeah, I have never heard of a diamond jack giving way. Guess it does happen though - and I know a few stories about shifty hydraulic jacks.

complain to the ACCC. people die every year from jack failures and they have and will enforce recalls.

It's a timely warning NEVER to work under a car only supported by a jack. Use stands

that is the downer of a trolley jack, if the hydraulics go they just drop! but then again any jack can give out, work safe people and use a proper car stand, and a pile of bricks does not count

My scissor jack slowly collapsed the other day too. Was just changing a tyre, and the sprocket teeth thingys on the inside of the diamond just slowly bent and the jack just collapsed to one side. Was just lowering it down too!

just the front left corner of the car on the specified jack points.

yea exactly or it would have caused some carnage on the brake rotor

I seen some dudes changing the diff of a XD-XF on the side of the road in a Dandenong industrial area once... (next to some pretty neat fresh looking skidmarks LOL)...

the car's arse end was up in the air, supported only by a jack about half way down the length of the car, propepd up into the tailshaft tunnel

front wheels chocked with bricks for safety, of course

re: that use photo, is it just me or is his back against one of those beams? thats asking to collapse!

worst i've done is a old commo was having its rear diff taken out, no where to jack it from to swap the stands, so it was done on a trolly jack and a length of wood under the tow hitch, kind of forgot to chock the wheels, soon as it was free from the stands it began to roll backwards a little, leapt in and put all my might to hold it from rolling back, mother was screaming to just let it drop and get clear, im like " screw that it'll be too hard to pick up again, get the bloody stands before i give way

managed to re-stand it before i dropped but that was a healthy dose of panic adrenaline.. have been very careful since then

have always wonder how i wasn't killed relying on jacks in haste in my old days. Now as Morton says, jack, stands and a few rims or something just to be sure.

i keep four old rims with old tyres on them around the house for jacking
i got a hydro trolley jack from autobarn (the blue $20 one) and axle stand's and wheel chock's a couple of week's ago and i was working on my car jacked her up chucked old rim's under her went to grab the axle stand just out of my reach and the bloody jack let go so i used the old scissor in the boot andgot the rim's out
the car whacked my knee as it was just under the fuel tank and i put a nice dent in the tank!
if i had no rim's under there i'd have been squished in half(we all know how bouncy the suspension in the old non irs vn/vp's are lol)

That bloke under the ute in the photo must have a death wish. If it didn't fall off those bearers and crush him it could still explode from him using an arc welder right near the fuel tank.

Suicide jack ftw (VL Standard Jack)

My old mans jack had to be replaced by Ford (he's learnt his lesson) because the jack was missint a few critical items, like retaining clips for one of the arms. Was quite a shock when i got it out from under my car and saw that it was missing and that i'd been crawled under the car at the time. Checked all in the boot of dads Territory and the entire garage floor and couldnt find any missing pieces.
