    Talking Firefox Users: tweaks

If you're using Mozilla Firefox, here's a little tweak that will help speed up the time it takes to load web pages for broadband users:

1.Type "about:config" into the address bar and hit return. Scroll down and look for the following entries:

    network.http.pipelining
    network.http.proxy.pipelining
    network.http.pipelining.maxrequests

Normally the browser will make one request to a web page at a time. When you enable pipelining it will make several at once, which really speeds up page loading.

    2. Alter the entries as follows:

    Set "network.http.pipelining" to "true"

    Set "network.http.proxy.pipelining" to "true"

Set "network.http.pipelining.maxrequests" to some number like 30. This means it will make 30 requests at once.

    3. Lastly right-click anywhere and select New-> Integer. Name it "nglayout.initialpaint.delay" and set its value to "0". This value is the amount of time the browser waits before it acts on information it receives.

Really? ^^ I'm the opposite, firefox isn't that much better in my opinion. I still use IE. Easy to use, no problems with it.

I'm going by using my dads computer. It's extremely fast as he doesn't have much crap stored on his comp, it's only about 6 months old etc. I didn't notice any difference at all.

just tried the tweaks and dont think it made much of a difference. so I got a bit carried away and started changing other values like delays and connection limits and now its a bit quicker but not enough to get excited about

hmm thought i posted here before but i'll try again.
Is pipelining the same as pre-fetching? I looked into this when we were having server load issues. it can cause many problems.

For the information of people doing this trick, Firefox can actually only handle 4 to 8 requests at a time depending on version. So setting it to 30 is a little like "look how big my e-wang is". if it could in fact do 30+ requests at a time it would flog servers and actually slow you down.

As for the last value being added as 0, be careful, yes the page will begin to render immediately bit if you don't have the newest wizzbang connection (bigpond doesn't count!) it'll actually slow you down.

But if you want the perception you are getting a page faster go for it!

Don't be shocked if some webservers block you because of this, i know of a couple or smaller or budget ones that have had to resort to this because the 'greed load' was becoming a problem.

Mines fast as it is, I don't think it needs configuring, but great info here.
