This might seem simple but it's a big problem to us. We're moving into our own home this week and tried to get the internet relocated. Who would have thought it would become such a drama. My current ISP say they can't do it because we're too far from the local exchange (more than 4.5km's). I thought fine, I'll take my business elsewhere. I called 6 other ISP's including bigpond and they all told us we can't get basic broadband in our new area. It's a highly developed residential area just 15 minutes south of Wollongong for crying out loud! The only option is to get dial up. The problem with that is my wife runs her web editing business from home and is constantly uploading and downloading all the time. Dial up isn't practical. I think it is disgusting in this day and age that something as simple as basic broadband cant be connected just 15 minutes from a major city. When I complained to Telstra they told me there were areas in the middle of Sydney that still can't get broadband!. Rediculous.
However optus told us they could do it if we switched over out home phone to them. But then told us it would take at least a month to connect. I'll definately be taking this further![]()

Thats the thing with Australia, we have one of the worst telecommunication networks in the world. There aren't enough people here to warrant a big push in competition. We pay the highest prices for the oldest technology until the telco's have to upgrade. A lot of new developments over here are laying fibre optics but the exchange is still the old copper wire so it's basically useless until they spend $20 billion upgrading them.
Thats disgusting....
I thought we're ok compared to the rest of the world. But I was wrong!
when we did the big move i knew we werent going anywhere for a long time i made dam sure on top of the "to do" list i checked if broadband was available in the area before i signed on the dotted line to purchase my property lol i hear this story countless times beats me why people dont look into these things before they move, also on the list is how much are land rates going to be, am i able to get foxtel/cable in my area when is bin day, wheres the nearest shop, public transport, school etc study your area people !
Position, position and....em, eh, can i get foxtel......while maybe this is a catastrophe of epic proportions to those addicted to their TVs, it is most likely a short term problem(cant you get satellite dish with Foxtel?) that isnt going to affect the value of a property in 20 years time?
Bin day, you'd not purchase if bin day wasnt to your liking?
Australia has always had rubbish pushed onto us and had it claimed as being "the best in the world"...
Our internet is worse than some third world countries, out unleaded petrol is pitiful...what they label as high priced "Premium Unleaded" here, is plain old "regular" anywhere else in the world, and thier "Premium" is much higher than anything we find here.
I'm going to say it...our cars are nothing to write home about either.
Oh sure, the new Falcon and Commodore are competant, pleasant to drive vehicles, but our industry is still wasting millions developing larger and larger
V8's, when they should live in the real world and be scaling back V8 production and pouring the cash into smooth, powerful V6 turbo diesels, and even, for lower models, four cylinder turbo diesels, as well as mixed fuel cars. The resale value of V8's will only drop over time as fuel inevitably rises, and they will face a GM and Ford USA-like dilemma, with vast car yards at the factory full of unsaleable SUV's and V8 cars.

Keep in mind ISP will tell you anything to get you to sign up even if its a flat out lie. I know trust me!
.:Blown VT V6, DAJ37:.
Fact: No ISP can Guarantee you BB, the only way to check if you can get it is if you sign up and a tech goes to the exchange to see if the ports avail. ALL ISP's will promise you the world for you business and in alot of cases will take over your line with out your permission and call it a accident. I know this as i work with AAPT and see it everyday. You can check on whirlpool to see if a ports avail but its never up to date and is only a guestamation. BB is never certian until its connected and it works in your home and thats the **** lol

Only consumer backlash(not buying their cars) or government regulations can change what the auto manufacturers give us. Be interesting if the current government addresses the heavy subsidies that have been put in place to support the current lunacy prevalent in our motor industry. If someone can explain why we need engines for road use that put out more than 150kW in a 1.5tonne car......Im all ears!
Hopefully the government doesnt cave into extending the current lpg rebate scheme or improve the subsidy.
Because we can? Why do you need a reason? Perhaps drive a few fast cars and then understand. I drive an 8 simply because i love the acceleration, sound, overall performance. On the same note, i love getting in my friends Evo 8 and taking that for a drive, 2 totally different cars both beautiful to drive. Does it really matter what people want to buy? Should people like you really have any say in why people shouldn't have a car that they want? If you do not like them you do not have to buy them. While there is demand, companies will make them. Even in Europe there is demand for high output motors and they are paying more than twice the fuel price.
As long as I make good money, i will continue to buy cars that I enjoy driving. Whether that is an 8 or a 6 or even a 4.

Really intelligent response there old wise guruSome people depend on fast reliable internet to make money. No money means can't repay mortgage, can't eat, can't fill up car with petrol... you get the idea? No internet and my wife loses over $1500 per fortnight. My point is that we're constantly told how technologically advanced this country is and we can't even have a decent communications system in a high population suburb. By the way, Guru, I couldn't give a stuff if we get Foxtel or not. How many people make their living from sitting in front of a TV.

I think your being a little unfair - your acting like your entitled to Broadband. Fact is, if you want it, then move where its available or utilise alternatives such as wireless. Or pay however many millions it would cost to get broadband to your area and sell it to your neighbours.

Just an update, I contacted Optus yesterday and got through to their indian call centre... They told me I could have Optus cable and home phone package for $99 per month. The phone deal includes unlimited calls local and long distance plus cable internet. Pretty good deal I thought. The Indian guy, called Roger, wanted to sign us up there and then. Then today I search Optus' website and the fine print says "only available to selected Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane customers". I went one step further and did a serviceability check on their website and it tells me we aren't able to be connected. Lucky I didn't sign up.

Yes, We'll just pick up our house we just bought and move it a little closer to the exchange shall we? On the topic of Wireless, no company which offers wireless internet covers our area. ....and why shouldn't we be entitled to broadband if we're willing to pay for it. I looked at satelite internet and the setup cost is near $3000 alone. Again this is a suburb just 15 or 20 minutes south of Wollongong. Not the back of whoop whoop.

Firstly I'd like to correct the thread title. It isn't "Australian Technology" that is behind, it is the infrastructure. You can blame all the respective telcos and governments all you like, but unless someone is willing to cough up the $ then we will not advance with the rest of the world. We are all quite happy to want cheaper services and lower taxes but also happy to whinge about the lack of services at the same time.
It also annoys me when people complain about their home internet being the centre of a business when they are only paying for a "consumer grade" service. If you want the guarantee of 1st class service with the support and uptime to match, then pay for a "business grade" service and most likely you will need the premises to go with it.
In the end people should really research where they are moving to to at least see if there is a possibility of getting a broadband connection.
Some people may have heard of Mawson Lakes here in SA. It was the broadband dead zone of the state for quite some time despite being one of the most advanced technological suburbs in the state, it took quite a few people and other providers to get some sort of infrastructure into the neighborhood. The lack of planning and foresight is the problem, our suburbs and population are increasingly technology hungry and that has caught people unwares.
When i was about about 10 years old (am 24now) my mother went over to hong kong with her now ex boyfriend, and she bought back with her one of the very first mini disk recorders/players to set foot in Australia! the point being is that after talking to the locals over there they classify Australia as the dumping ground, because when we get all our new technology that hits our shops here its actually old technology as far as the rest of the worlds technology goes!
