In a follow up to some research i did years ago where a few of us looked at causes of obesity i thought i would ask the question outright.
Why are you fat?
There seems to be unlimited access to ways and means of being in a normal weight range, so why are so many people overweight?
You can answer on someone else's behalf if it makes you feel better...
(i know there are if's and but's but the easiest way to check is using your BMI - try it here if you don't know how to work it out).
I'll start. I was lazy, gained about 15 kilos above normal weight range when i stopped exercising. Decided they needed to come off again so started eating better and took up walking. I was actually amazed at how easy it was.
Im worse than you, I have gained HEAPS since having 2 kiddies, lost HEAPS then put it all back on again, not looking after myself eating wise and working at Maccas didnt help eitherWont give you numbers, but for my height etc I should be 65kgs.... Im certainly NOT 65kgs lol
I have been going on CalorieKing.com.au - Australian Online Diet and weight loss club. Lose weight for good! AWESOME and free way to keep track of your eating and exercise, also rather than going online you can download the diet/exercise planner.
This should be interesting.
But I can't see many fat people admitting to being that way because of their own actions.
I wish I could put on weight.... I haven't ate anything healthy in months and have eating as much fast food as possible... Haven't gained a killo![]()
Im fat cuz i have a drinking problem. do go to the gym now and im trying to stop drinking (quitting smoking was alot easier)
This is a controversial opinion but it's mine and I'll express it. The majority of overweight people are fat simply because of lifestyle choices. The poor excuses of genetics or medical problems don't cut it. You are fat because you eat rubbish and are lazy. There are legitimate medical reasons why some people are overweight, but they are in the minority.
Most "diets" don't work because that sort of kj intake is unsustainable. Changing habits and avoiding certain foods is the key to permanent healthy weight ranges. You see a lot of media coverage about some programs and companies that show off their successes, but over time these people get back up to unhealthy weights again because the programs are either too expensive to follow, or they are not a permanent dietry change.
Rather than binge dieting, people need to see nutrition and exercise professionals to change their diet and exercise habits to more healthy and safe alternatives. For most people it is a hard road and decisions need to be made every day whether to remain fat or get healthy.
Lucky bugger! My hubby is the same, about 170cms and weighs 59kgs yet he will eat a kilo tub of yoghurt, a whole large block of chocolate, big bag of burger rings, plus his dinner a night and not gain a thing!
NOT fair!
According to my BMI I am borderline obese. Yet I have a body fat rating of 82 which is very good.
BMI is just one way of calculating whether someone is "obese" or not. I'm 6'1 and 96kg but still pretty fit.
I could still stand to lose 3 or 4 kilos and put it back on in muscle though![]()
I'm the same, my BMI according to the chart is 25, borderline overweight, I'm 6'2 and 88kgs. But I also do some weight training which pushes my weight up. Haven't done a body fat percentage for a while so I don't know what that is.
If it makes you feel any better women are more prone to carrying extra because they're fat cells are bigger than men's. So I guess you could call that a genetic disposition.
My wife has a theory that before supermarkets, 7/11's and 24 hour fast food outlets man had a particular gene in their make up that would cause fat to be stored for when times were lean. She reasons that over the years as this gene no longer became needed, it slowly disappeared. But some people still have it. She did research on it when she was doing a medical degree.
Don't know how much merit it has, but interesting concept I thought.
Before all the supermarkets and fast food outlets, man used hunt for food. Running around after a meal kept the weight off, the only hunting man does now is for the pizza menu and the phone.
Exactly there are so many factors that influence weight that using just the one measure is pointless IMO.
Muscle mass, fat mass and bone density obviously being the main influences. Body proportions have a large part to play as well, I'm not talking fat but just the general body shape of someone. If someone has a genetic makeup that say has large legs and gluts, then they're more likely to be heavier than someone who has a larger upper body.
It'd be impossible for me to reach the acceptable weight range for my height at 80kg and still be healthy IMO. I'd be skin and bones.
But anyways, I'm taking it off topic. My weakness is beer![]()
Where can you get a body fat percentage test done? GP or Gym?
im 180cm tall and am about 84kg last time i checked but im not fat
but i gotta shave these luv handles and get my 8 pack back![]()
An inaccurate one but fairly close is a set of scales that does it. What they do is measure the resistance through your body and come up with a figure. Usually a bit higher than what it actually is.
Yep as the bright sparks mentioned BMI isn't always accurate for everyone, but like i said in the original post it is an easy way to work it out if you aren't a body builder or already know your body. It is a good chart for the very average person.
For the record I come in under my ideal BMI. I have as much trouble putting on weight as a lot of people do losing it. I'm 5'5" and weigh in at a hefty 49KG!![]()
i gainted 24 kg after quiting smoking,
im 5ft 11 inches, and i weigh 98kg. well i did last time i checked.
due to start new diet and exercise under doctors controll, expect to be healty again soon enough.
the weight loss was casue i ate like a machine, suplimented smokes with food, and didnt stop when the adiction was over.
so only got myself to blame
i am the god of britany spears womanizer on just dance on the wii
I'm 176cm and 58kg!:0 and 10-11% body fat, I've never varied more than 2kgs from that weight apart from times of being sick in the last 18 or so years. So being fat I don't get how it happens at all
im almost 6 foot.. almost.. and weigh less than 60 kilos. i used to go to the gym, and when i first started, they checked my body fat percentage and it was just over 5%. which they said was the lowest they had seen at the time. i cant put on weight. im probably one of the laziest people you will meet.. it sucks cos i want some fat so i can turn it into muscle. anyone got any good diets that will help? like certain types of food to eat to help gain some beef? (and no, i tried eating 100 bucks worth of maccas week on end and it got me no-where)
I wasn't having a go. I was just saying that in can be a very inaccurate guide to general health.
If someone falls into an undesirable category in the BMI, it doesn't necessarily mean they are, irrespective of whether they're a body builder or not. It can actually be very dangerous to your health if you put your faith into the BMI exclusively. Especially when people have strongly varying bone densities, muscle mass is 3 times heavier than fat and body types vary greatly. All of which can be heavily affected irrespective of fitness levels or workout regimes. If someone looks purely at the BMI then goes I'm fat, when they aren't it can have some very serious implications.
There are some very well respected doctors and nutritionist that want the BMI downplayed or scrapped altogether because of the dangers it presents to people who do not fully understand the other influencing factors.
Likewise the inverse could said, someone with high body fat, and low muscle mass can fall within a healthy BMI category, when they clearly are not.
