hi, just wondering can you buy dialup networking modems that only have 1 network outlet not with a 4 port router built in like the netcomm sm4200 dialup modem has or cheaper dialup modems with a 4 port router built in.
the reason im asking is because i want to do networking and do wireless on the laptop as well and i need a dialup networking modem to do it until i get and can afford broadband, so im wondering if i can have both new and second hand prices on the following.
1. netcomm sm4200 modem new/2nd hand price.
2. Modems with only one network outlet (Any brands that make them) new/2nd hand price.
3. cheaper modems with a 4 port router built in (Any brands that make them) new/2nd hand price.
4. Serial to Network outlet adaptor to run a standard modem on a network router new/2nd hand price.
5. router with a serial port to use a standard modem on a network new/2nd hand price.
Theyre few and far between with a 4 port interface, there is just no demand for them.
I saw one years ago at auction and it went for about $400.
Cheapest way to go would be to make a linux router out of a old junkbox machine and make it dial on demand. Would cost you anywhere from nothing to maybe $50.
unless you try daisy chaining the PC's but that would rely on one box to be online for the others to work

Your cheapest option would be to create a standard network using standard wired / wireless routers.
And then setting up 1 PC with a dialup modem. Then use "Windows Internet Connection Sharing" to share the dialup connection across the network.
The only downside to this is that the main computer would have to be powered up and dialed up to the internet for the other computers to access the internet, even if you are not working / using the main computer.
Also keep in mind that your download speed of dialup ranges between 1kb - 5kb, and divide that by the amount of computers that will be using the internet and you will have an extremely slow connection if everybody is downloading / surfing.
This is how I setup a primary school network of about 10 computers, with the dialup connection being on the office computer. It was extremely slow but the couldn't afford broadband.

i tried using a pentium 2 or 3 or celeron as the main computer for internet networking and used windows ICS but sometimes it works but other times it doesnt and i cant do anything else and i csnt afford broadband yet and i wanted to know if you could buy ethernet routers with usb and serial ports on and use the dialup modem and configire the settings in the router so it will work on any computer. if so how much.
also wondering how to get around the optus aurora because if i dont live in a remote area i may not beable to activate the card for seven and imparga.
am i able to activate the commercial channels in a non remote area without filling out papers. if so how?
is there other ways to get around the aurora, just interested to find out because i heard about it and want to get around it if possible.
can someone please list the free to air satellites that transmit english/american/australian/canadian free to air channels to tune into because it ta kes too long to find.
use your comp it has a modem as standard.
use USB for networking via a hub

I've got both an external and internal dial up modem if that helps....
well i want to know what dialup ethernet modems are worth to buy new and second hand (Any models you can think of)
google ftw!!!!!
dialup is old tech now,not many people know models off hand or can be bothered looking for it, especially when you can do that yourself
that and its so useless to share a dialup connection over more than 2 computers! My god that would be slow... best bet would be to get another phone line, have two dial up accounts and snyc the lines(yes it can be done) then run that through a linux router/gateway setup and share it that way.
i didnt even know there was ethernet modems(dial up) around... cool...lol....
aZk.
but see, buying another phone line and dialup plan would outweigh broadband and a cheap ethernet adsl modem, which he cant afford anyway.
edit: off topic, but damn my avatars funny as hell, dont you think?
its kinda scary.... the avatar... im not sure two lines would out weigh it.... hmmm doesnt matter... dial up is gay.... so whos the guy getting mauled by rabbits?
aZk.
lol, im bored as hell atm. should goto bed.
