this has been on my mind for a while and i cant work it out, my friend owns a white el fairlane with 780,000kms on it, yes its on the original engine. and a nono taxi, he knows because i asked his dad who is actually a cab driver. it just beats me how it hasnt broken down yet, a cab driver once told me that its better for your engine to be running all the time as long as its serviced because everything is lubricated all the time without many cold starts.
yep its definantly better for the engine to be running all the time then the quick starts to move it a couple meters up the driveway. whether id but a ex taxi or not well probly not, because lets face it, they are treated like sh!t. saying that though, i probably still wouldnt buy a car that was driven 3kms a day to take to kids to school, in that time, the engine wouldnt of have enough time to get to normal running temp and more then likely would have more wear and tear on the enigine then a taxi's. thats why when you see a taxi pulled over in a taxi zone or whatever, there engine is always running, they hardly ever turn the thing off, imagine how much money they would lose if the engine had to be rebuilt over a few days because they kept stop starting all the time...
Its not just the motor that has wear and tear after 780000kms. Its also everything else.
Australia. Love it or leave it
me mate had an lx torri that wound the odometer over and was still on the original moter ... lol just would die even with all the towing he did

If it's lots of highway k's it's ok. Stop start traffic is what kills them. Sitting on the highway for ages at 100km/hr is good for engines.
I've heard the BA and AU type taxi's are good for around 700 000 on the engine but will have eaten a couple of gear boxes in that time.
You find that gas improves engine life by around 40% if the motor is a factory gas setup like most ford taxi's are. As said above a car that has less cold start will last a lot longer then one that does it everyday.
I'd say many things would have been replaced like suspesion components brakes and prolly even a gearbox or 2.
If its a well looked after taxi i reckon it could do a million with only a head being replaced as i find at work a lot of e series heads vsr becomes an issue
PUB24/7 At your work has anyone tried running a flashlube type drip feed system running either the standard flashlube or PM800 to eliminate VSR?
Kind of off topis BUT Anyone know the round about figure of kms a Taxi does before retirement?
That's the trouble- LPG being a hot, dry fuel. I haven't yet heard of manufacturers being able (probably more likely willing) to alter valve seats or another system to help prevent this.
and everything said I heard everyones opinions on the bad side of buying an Ex cop car, yet Ive done 30 000 kays in 6 months and havent had any issues, its now at 111 000 kays. Then again mine was from the country and saw quite a bit of highway kays as it was an inspectors car
My VX had the same kays on it and was beginning to have all sorts of dramas mechanical wise which is why I sold it.
Dont know that I'd buy a taxi, apart from the panel and interior damage, you just have to get into one to see how their driven, I'd safely say the rims see more gutters then your average car
That said where did the Fairlane originate? Its extremely easy for a country car to do very high kays, like mine which clocked up 90 000 kays in just over 12 months, and still be in good order because of the simple fact it can sit at 110kph (or whatever) for extended periods of time .... just think about the old saying "he lives an hour from anywhere"
Ive only gotta jump on the highway for 2 hours and head towards Bathurst. Once Im past Bathurst then it becomes an hour from here, 2 hours from there ... all legit highway kays! Easy to clock them up
ive seen an el wheelchair taxi that has done 898,000k's and doesnt miss a beat!

Screw the icecream...
Who wants a moustache ride?
The company I got my car from retires their Taxi's at 350,000kms.... They sell for $4000-$6000 they only use magnetic signs and my car has 2 holes in the interior, although mine does have a few dents & scratches. Not all Taxi's are buggered, mine was well looked after really, although it was driven by my dad most of its working life.
898,000kms OMG! Thats heaps lol!
Yeah a mate's dad had an 82 ford fairlane on dual fuel, clocked over 1,000,000 km's!! I couldnt believe it.
