WOMEN were surrounded by a drunken mob of louts hurling sexual abuse in frightening scenes at a popular car show at the weekend.

At the height of the crisis at the Summernats in Canberra on Saturday night, organisers rejected an offer for police back-up to help security guards.

About 100 men, many of them drunk, paraded around the grounds just after 6.30pm, yelling "Tits or rubber!" at women and chanting "Angry mob".

Police said that the group had organised a snap rampage in protest against the eviction of three people from the event.

At least one young woman was reduced to tears and was shielded by a male companion as the mob, which covered 5km around Exhibition Park without being stopped, yelled at women to take their shirts off.

The ACT Government yesterday warned the show's organisers to do more to promote tolerance and respect for women. The event, in its 21st year, attracts more than 100,000 people.

ACT Police Minister and acting Chief Minister Simon Corbell said police had told him the protest began after three people were ejected by Summernats security.

Mr Corbell said show organisers had rejected police help.

"In relation to comments such as asking women to remove their shirts, regrettably this does occur at this event," he said.

"It highlights the need for Summernats organisers to continue to improve the environment at Summernats so it is a tolerant and respectful environment."

Summernats spokesman Dale Brittain denied the parade was in protest against the eviction of three people and said a full investigation into the cause of the mob action was under way.

Alcohol was a factor, he said.

"It is a new phenomenon; we have never had that happen at the event before," Mr Brittain said.

"We haven't received any official reports of damage."

if anyone was there can they give their view, the site i grabbed this off the people on there that were at the event were saying it was only really happening to the skanky looking chics.

its what goes on at nats at anytime of the day u will find guy and GIRLS yelling to see some nudity

the news needs to really go and find something better to do and stop hassling a great event

you have to look at most of the young women who go there. they complain about getting harrassed yet they get tarted up and ride around in the backs of utes. i am sure some of them are actually there for the cars and to have fun.. but they know what the event is like and still behave the way they do knowing that they will get attention and they cry harrasment when they get it.

i do not condone any of the behaviour at summernats, i think it is crap. i would like to see an alcohol ban, or atleast a curfew for next year.

they need to cut the alcohol off in the arvo or dont sell it until the night or something to sorta stem the people that just drink the whole day and get out of control.... or make it so u have to drink it in a bar and not wonder around with it

thats what they were saying over at the ford camp, media blowing it way out and only the skanky ones got "abused" a few were there with their missus and dressed appropiatly(sp) and not a word was said. i wasn't there i wouldn't know but thats what was being said

it has nothing to do with looks. they dont care. good, bad, in between... they dont care cos they are retarded and need to get lives. the stripper bus runs (used to, not sure if it still does) around EPIC and you jump on board and they take you to the strip joint. you get alot better looking girls there and you dont need to stand on the side of the road for 30 minutes to catch a 3 second look.

I've wanted to go to summernats for abou the last 5 years, but I've heard many stories, both of tormenting women and cars being damaged. when I was in a position to afford the vacation, I was a dad, and one story I was told sprang to mind, of a family on the cruise route, who had a cup full of beer thrown through the open drivers window and cover the kids in the back, which scared them half to death.
so I know I'll never take my kids, and wouldn't want a holiday without them

Man i have been to summernats as a kid, since i was like 6. Never had a problem. Stories just get twisted around a lot and makes a little issue seem like a big issue. Stupid do gooders around canberra want summernats gone, so they make summernats seem bad. I was watching the news the other day, they interviewed Chic and he said, its not an event for the family, it never was meant to be a family event. More of an event for 18-24 year olds.

And how the media said we were an angry mob haha. Of cause we were angry, their was nothin to do after they stopped the cruze. There was no violence by the mob, no damage, no rape, no anything. Just the media wanting a good story

Yeah the numbers would drop heaps. Its just a small number of people who go stupid with alcohol. I admit i love having a few drinks at summernats. mmm JD slushys. But some people cant handle alcohol and go off the rails. Thats when they should beef up the security.

the part which fks me off the most is the bogan wankers who yell at anyone with breasts. when my mum drove off the arena on saturday afternoon at 2pm she had drunk idiots leaning in the car telling her to get her tits out. and she is 47 years old!

and on friday after we finished working a few of us went to grab a beer. my dad said to me and his mates daughter (who is, and looks 15) to go grab a seat and some blokes over heard and said 'hey, ya can come and sit over here' and pointed to his dick. i mean, seriously... they have no respect, no brains and adding alcohol makes them 10 times worse.

honestly, if they cancel summernats i wont shed a tear. i will be ****ed off that ACT has no more events i enjoy, but i wont be upset. i cop a fair bit of crap cos i wear a shirt that says 'official' and all i do is help to make every other persons time more enjoyable. they dont see it, noone does. well, there is actually a few people who say we do a good job but it is few and far between.

I have just finished talking to a mate who went there & I know for a fact that I wouldnt bother going. He got caught in the middle of the problems with the drunken idiots & was dumbfounded by there actions. What a bunch of tossers.
To say that only the skanks got harrassed is also a joke. These are the same type of girls that everyone was defending when the muslims were giving them a hardtime. IMO it doesnt matter if its a carshow or a flower show, people should be able to go about their day without being harassed by a bunch of morons.

I never harrassed anyone. Altho their were 2 or 3 ladies there that couldnt keep their boobs in their shirts. Im sure everyone at summernats seen them at least once. And i have to say the wernt the best lookin haha.

Yes, there was a congregation of people there and some cops did over react but on they only removed minors who were intoxicated and 98% of the crowd moved back when requested by the police

Story in the paper the day after had the SOG cops up there, the water cannon, etc to quell the rioters....
