If it is used to get ****wits like the idiot caught doing 132 in a 60 zone after having his licence for 6 weeks then good. If it is used to catch guys who like to stomp it fromt he lights legally...then bad.

What P plater has a FPV Thypoon?

"What we find is people don't pick them as police cars and it's easier to pick offences like speeding, using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelts
Good to see they are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars in order to stop these violent criminals.

And although it has a very serious side to it, the new cars are providing police with one or two "lighter moments"
Wonder if we will see any of these "lighter moments" on YouTube.

plenty of 'P' platers over here in performance vehicles....cashed up tradies and mine workers...

won't see them vehicles over in our dept...it'll cost too much to run them and our commish has promised to go 'green' with part of our fleet.

we'll stick with the V6 for some time yet for normal frontline patrol work.

as minux said, if it is used to catch the idiots on the roads, well then so be, might as well blend in...

well if its to blend in and "monitor/set things right" then fair enough (i guess) but if there gonna be (which has been see heaps of times) performing illegal races/operations and be the ones to edg the other driver on for a race then thats bull****!!

and who drives a fpv tyfon?? well there is a lerner driveing around in a brand new ve calais and another driveing a ve clubsport here lol im like wtf dude

haha and there also saying that there gonnna use older cars to catch hoons....so be care full that next 1922 put put bang! may be a cop :P

Different story, us Easterners have power to weight restrictions or cube restrictions. We're not allowed to drive Typhoons on our P's unless we get an exemption. Which is extremely rare.

It is illegal for full licence holders to display P plates. Are they going to book themselves everytime they go out? I don't think violating legislation in this way is good enough. Fair enough about speeding when lights/sirens aren't appropriate, but masquerading as a P plater, when the law specifically forbids it is a bit much.

On that, Steve Johnson from the cats was caught last night doing 127 in a 50 zone...The guy is a ****ing peanut. If he doesn't lose his licence for at least 12 months...i'll be damned. His car was impounded under the hoon legislation.

So they can slap P Plates on and pretend to be P Platers, does that mean we can chuck lights and a siren on and pretend to be cops now too???

We used to do that back when i was 18, hire strobe lights, pull people over, wait till they stopped and drive off. Only did it at night, was childish harmless fun.

In the mid 90's we'd often see this maroon/burgundy VR with dodgy 'lights' pulling people over on Beach Rd, used to always pull over cars with young P plate girls in them, wasn't you was it ?
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?

Dunno about there. Hubby was driving my car with the P plates up and we were just asked to take them down.

Never heard of this... When did this start? Although I am in the ACT, where while on my L's and P's I was allowed to do the speed limit, have a .02 blood alcohol limit and drive whatever the hell I wanted! And after P's, straight onto a full Gold license.

Used to really piss off my cousins in NSW :P lol

Got to love the fake strobe thing though. Seem to be more popular than I thought!

My mate has a "daddy's car" so he has a nice expensive performance car that just fits under power to weight and is under the old P plate rules and people are usually pretty sus on him. He has been pulled over before and asked if its a stolen car.
Makes you wonder the thinking of the police, who would steal a car and first thing they do is put P plates up?

fantastic! If I didn't have to pay taxes to fund THEIR F6 typhoons, I could be driving around in one!

And while people are complaining about lack of police presence in the community, what better way to fix this than to buy them all high performance unmarked cars

I think the half a million dollars or so could have gone towards something significantly more important

Thats been around for a long time, I was only telling hubby about it the other day (me being ex Geelong) and think it is one thing that should be introduced to WA. There are SO many young people here who go out and get themselves high powered cars just so they look good in front of their mates, and sure enough end up hugging a tree.

Is it even illegal to drive a car on a full licence with L or P plates displayed?

    I don't think so...

Other wise driving school cars with their permanent L plates everywhere would have to remove them when there wasn't a learner driving.

As for what Police do to catch people, the answer is simple. Don't do anything wrong and you don't have to worry about being caught. Worry about what you are doing and not how the Police go about their business.

And no, I am not a Police Officer.

My job involves seeing the result of road trauma first hand on a daily basis. This is usually the result of speeding, drinking or breaking road rules and yes, more often than not there is a P plate on one of the cars. Please note that I am not P plate bashing, everyone has to start somewhere and sometimes it is not even their fault.

There was a guy going around pulling people over on the highway near my place apparently he would wear a similar uniform and all, after naming all the things someone had done wrong he hinted a monetary bonus would make it go away.... got a fair few ppl too and I dont think cops ever got him....

It is illegal. I have read through the legislation personally and know this to be the case.

You'll find driving schools reverse their L plates, otherwise they are breaking the law.

Road Safety (Drivers) Regulations 1999 - SECT 217 Probationary drivers must have "P" plates

    (2) A person who is not a probationary driver must not drive a motor vehicle
on a highway if a "P" plate or a plate which resembles a "P" plate is
displayed facing out from the front or rear of the vehicle.

Everyday i see driving schools with their L plates up. I guess its prob diff in the act, like the car restrictions, alcohol, and speed limits. Only good thing about act is they kept all the old rules.

well a lerner driveing scool has "lerner driveing school" on the car so its uderstandable that its there business that they do, however a cop driveing in a high performance (udercover) veilcle that cost us tax payers hundreds of thousands of bucks driveing around acting like p platers (i.e hooning in this case to catch hoons) with p plate illegally shown is stupid

now i can understand when i see a high performance MARKED cop cars lol

and yeh forgot about the new laws on p plters not allowed to drive high performance cars......so if another cop see them driveing a fpv tyfoon then they car charge them with driveing a restricted car?
    lol
