I went camping at the beach in Robe (SA) last week with a few mates (aged 19,19,18, 18 and 17). We thought it would be a good way to catch up since we don't see much of each other anymore with different uni's etc.
There are 3 caravan parks in Robe, and 2 of them wouldn't even give us a site when we rang up. The third let us in, but sent each of us a rule sheet with a few highlighted, such as no noise after 10, walking pace speed limit, keep everything clean etc.
Once our week was up we went to say bye to the manager, and he told us he was reluctant at the start to let us in, and expected to kick us out after the first night. He then went on to say we were the most well behaved young group he had ever had, and there are families that could learn a thing or two from us. Apparantly the last people he had to kick out were grandparents!
If it's this difficult for a group of mates to take a holiday, I'm not even going to mention how hard it has been...and still is...to find a house to rent with 4 uni students!
If only more people are like the caravan park manager and at least give us a go maybe they would see that not it isn't all of us throwing wild parties and hooning down the streets.
I realise that a lot of people have very good reason to have little faith, but it's extremely frustrating for the sensible ones of us to do anything.
BTW, if anyone knows of a 4BR house between Box Hill and the City they would be willing to rent to uni students, let me know. These rejection phone calls can get depressing

yes, i agree, it is VERY frustrating for the sensible ones, i myself am alot more sensible than others.. and i know where you're coming from.
not exactly a young person thing, but i got told to pre-pay for petrol at a servo the other day because the lady obviously though i was gunna do a runner. perhaps more of a 'p-plater that drives a v8' thing.. anywho back onto topic lol.
haha, that reminds me of one time i got fuel in Melbourne somewhere. There was someone waiting behind me so i jumped in the car to pull fowards before paying (which is what you do in the country town I'm from) and the attendant came running out yelling at me

Living in the country i do that to, most times i actually drive to pay caus im a lazy **** lol. Also being younger i see that we are never trusted. Even the other day my car broke down and these people came over to help and they wouldnt believed me that it had petrol, i had filled it up 20 minutes ago. Motels etc are the same for me and my girlfriend, but if their rude about it they dont get our business, plenty of motels around.
I have done that many times before and never had a problem. It keeps things moving when the servo is busy. I have seen others do it many times also. I have always thought that the attendant would be used to it by now and it's not like he is going to stop anyone driving away without paying for it anyway.

I still do it in Melbourne anyway, and that is the only time i have had a problem. Maybe the guy before me had done a runner or something and he was just a bit edgy.

Just recently, my mate had a bucks weekend in Echuca where we went paintballing and we stayed in a backpackers. Anyway, while we were out on the field, we were having trouble between my group of about 26 boys and this other bucks group from Sunbury, and there ended up being a fight where paintball guns were used as striking weapons between my group and these idiots from Sunbury.
We got back to the backpackers and guess who was also staying there? That's right, the Sunbury douchebags. Long story short, we woke up the next morning and we were outside having brekky in the courtyard and talking to the lady who owns it, and she was telling us how the Sunbury douchebags left early morning because the police were called due to them p*ssing and sh*tting on mattresses and carpets in their rooms, breaking items in the rooms, destroying pillows and all kinds of things.
As we were leaving the lady checked our rooms and said we were the most well behaved bunch of drunken young men she had ever had stay there and we were welcome back anytime. We even stripped the beds off for them and put the sheets and pillowcases into a huge basket for them.
But honestly, i don't blame accomodation managers and owners for not trusting young people. Just think, if you were alot older and owned a million dollar car and you gave some young blokes a lift and they left cigarette butts, rubbish, dirt and filth all throigh your car, would you give them a lift again? No, you wouldn't. Unfortunately the minority ruin it for the majority.

Hate to say it but a few douches spoil it for the rest of us~ Every time I stay in a hotel they give me funny looks and ask me to pay a larger than than the normal $200 cash security deposit... it always makes me laugh because my wife and I actually run a hotel.
We always turn the music either right down when we are in the park, or off if its getting late and kids might be sleeping.
It's little things like that that aren't hard much of a sacrifice but gives us young guys such a better image. It's just frustrating that all young guys don't do it!
The manager told us that half the time when they have groups of young people staying there new arrivals ask to be put as far away from them as they can

We refuse to lease to anyone under 25, we also ask to provide proof of income on a 35% rule(our real estate agent anyway), if you are not full time employed, forget it.
I know we are not the only ones who go by these simple rules.
Alot of people have told me we are too harsh...none of these people actually own their own property...So i guess they could never understand why we refuse to take a risk with such a valuable investment.

My dad owns a brand new house he is leasing out and so is my aunt, both are at Phillip Island, and plenty of couples and groups under 25 years of age have applied and all were refused.
An investment property that is worth a large sum of money isn't something you stuff around with. He would rather pay the bills for his house and so would my aunt, until they found suitable occupants.

Its tough though when some Real Estate agents tell us it's because we have no rental history. Easy for you to say buddy! We are trying to get some!
We have been supplying guarantor letters from our parents saying they will pay rent if for some reason we can't afford it, but I have been working over harvest, earning about $2000 a week so that shouldn't be a problem. (as long as i resist the urge to keep spending on my car!)
I dunno what more we can do really. Starting to cut it a bit fine now since we really need one before March

If I was looking at heading away and p*ssing on with my mates I wouldn't choose to go to a caravan park anyway. We would go somewhere where we wouldn't have to worry about how loud and drunk we were. Simple.
I actually like the fact that alot of older people expect me to be rude and to misbehave. Sometimes the suprise on their face is priceless.
and you forget that alot of people that need rental accomodation are uni students, who CANT get a full time job... 3 unis with part timers can easy afford rent... i know because i do it on a weekly basis... sure pick out the wankers but financially, dont discriminate based on full time employemnt thats just bull ****
aZk.
Exactly, so I can't work full time, and now that harvest is finished I am not working until I get down to melbourne and get a part time job. Only problem is that I'm expected to get the job and be working with nowhere to live yet.
Its all a lot of bother really

i agree. whats full time employment got to do with it? most young people at that age that are full time are probably high school dropout apprentices that i wouldnt trust with my property. id rather give it to a uni student that can prove he has the financial support to pay for rent.

I manage all 6 of my own rental properties (real estate agents in Canberra are money leeches who do nothing for their fees) as there really isn't much involved. Not sure of other states.
I am fussy about who I lease to as well. MUST have full time employment and proof of income whereby rent is not more than 40% of the total household gross. Age is no problem for me. I am lucky enough never to have had to rent anywhere, any time but I know how hard it is for younger people and there are always people like me when I was that age out there. I have faith in age. Just don't come to me without a full time job.
Wouldn't it be cheaper or easier for you guys to rent a unit or a flat. That what I did last year and got no problem getting them. There were 3 of us living and sharing the rent.
