Default Any Guitar players out there? Tips/advice, easy songs to help out the beginners

    G'day,

well after watching an Oasis DVD the next day i drove past a guitar shop and bought an Electirc and acoustic guitar, a couple of books, tuner, capo, amp etc. Now i just need to know how to play it lol. im not interested in lessons but just some basic songs using chords.

So throw me some songs that are nice and easy to play, iv learnt the intro to Wonderwall just then and im loving it so if anyone has any tricks or tips let me know.

    Cheers guys.

I play mostly bass but ive messed around with electric a bit, easiest song for guitar is Smoke on the Water by Deep Purple, Enter Sandman is also fairly easy. What i would recommend is getting someone to help you with the first couple of steps so they can point you in the right direction, makes things a lot easier.

download a program called guitar pro and start searching in google for song names and add gp4 or gp5 on the end of the search. the program scrolls along the tabs while the midi version of the song plays along. sounds cool and a lot easier to learn

heres what you do as well, place your finger on the same fret on two strings, then on the string above those 2, place another finger 2 frets down. thats a power chord. learn that and you can play pretty much any rock song on the radio at the moment

Two totally different techniques with acoustic and electric. Playing chords on an electric is way easier because it is a lazy guitar. You don't have to hit every string in the chord exactly right and it will still sound good. Acoustic is less forgiving. I learnt on an acoustic, then moved to electric. Made the transition easier as I had good finger placement already. Power chords are good for songs with quick changes as you only have to move two fingers in the same position. Wait til you get to minor suspended chords, they are a bastard.

What you want to do is when you have a shower, pi55 on your finger tips. Toughens them up.

Yeah acdc have some pretty easy songs, Highway to Hell is a song everyone tries to play as a beginner, dont play it till you get the hang of some easier songs. TNT is fairly easy.

Smoke on the Water is a must learn for anyone that plays guitar, well just the intro atleast. Ive found AC/DC (best band ever )songs nice and easy to play, tell the solos... may i suggest you trying thunderstuck first

Also i would make sure you dont get any bad habbits starting off, get used to picking up and down, pull off's and hammer on's and having your fingers in the right place for a chord.

    Good luck and have fun!

TNT was the first song i learned to play, but the solos is just too fast for a beginer! Highway to hell is a great song to try first now that i think of it, even the solos not that fast/hard.

Ahh i wouldnt suggest thunderstruck first, theres no way a beginner would be able to do the hammer ons or whatever they are straight off the bat. If you wanna play something like thunderstruck play Blind - Korn they have pull offs (ignore the 7 string mumbo jumbo and play on ther 6th) or even The Beautiful people - Marilyn Manson, then move up to Thunderstruck maybe. Thing you gotta learn with Thunderstruck is timing and being able to mute the other strings.

Yeah i would suggest Smoke on the water as a first song, The intro to Iron Man by Sabbath and enter sandman, they will keep you occupied for a while. If you want easy stuff, play any punk... Ramones for example. Only problem i have with that kinda stuff its just power chords and theres no real...melody. With the songs weve mentioend you can play it and say "hey i know that song"

A few easy sing a long type campfire songs would be Hotel California by the Eagles. House of the Rising Sun, The Animals. Elvis songs are always fun. If you are feeling confident, have a go at Stairway to Heaven, Led Zepelin. Google guitar tabs, a good way to learn riffs. The only problem is you will need to listen to the song to get the timing right.

Get yourself a book called The Great Buskers Book for guitar. Or another one is 101 Easy Guitar Songs, there are about 6 or 7 volumes of that one from different genres.

rage against the machine are fun to play when you're starting out, some pearl jam also. Seeing as you have a capo i reckon learn under the bridge by the chili peppers. The intro is a great way of learning open chords with your capo on the 2nd fret. After that you can progress to the bar chords in the verse and chorus.

Also, I'd suggest taking some lessons, even if its only a couple to get you started. I used to learn down at Holden Hill Music back in the day, and i remember in my first few weeks I picked up heaps, definitely gave me a head start.

Oh and grab powertab editor, its tab editing software that plays back the track for you, much better than learning through txt files.

    here for the software
    and here for the tabs

    Creedance for easy rythym strumming
Stairway to Heavan some chord tecniques
Gunners for the penatonic scale and note bending.
    Metalica for Powerchords
Blues because they are cool and sound good and most Rock is Blues based.

I dont play much just a bit ,but my Brother is quite good.
I have also shared houses with a lot of musos

If I was you I would be trying to play the acoustic guitar more before the electric

(altho I love the sound of a ibanez running through the line 6 and into a 100watt marshell)

The acoustic will help you build chops on your fingertips and get your technique lots cleaner

If you really are just starting out I would try to go right to the basics and play a lot of the old stuff by the beatles, by doing this you will learn the timing of the chord changes and your technique will be so much nicer when you plug in the electric

Just takes a lot of time and pratice but it is worth it in the end as you can play when you go out on a camping trip and chicks LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!

The wood and paint has so much to do with the acoustics of the guitar that it is not funny, you will have to look into this alot.

Or you could try and get a cheapo guitar strip it back and shape it to what ever you like. That way you know the timber is right for the body of the guitar
