    Default Insurance Just Not Right!

I got bored the other day so i did a little experiment in regards to insurace... in particular RACV.

I ran up to get a quote as myself for my 1989 BMW 318i 2dr.

    Car value = 5000

    Insuance per year = 1450

(DOn't worry, i already have insurance but i was jst bored...)

Then i rang up and added 3 years to my age and changed car...

This time i said i had a monaro cv8z.... so about 45,000 odd in value.

Same questions about incidents, car location, etc.

Anyway, the quote was 1600 per year.... 200 bux more that for a 5000 old, slow and ****ty bmw!!!

So i would understand that if i rang up and said im drving the BMW, i've lost my license twice and crash on a regular basis but i've never had a accident that was my fault and 2 speeding fines in the last 4 years!

    Its silly.... just plain silly!

there is a few things which will affect that. One, your age. Adding 3 yrs to it is going to help. It might have pushed you into the next age bracket. 21-25, 26-31. 32-55, 56+. Also, yeah the Commy is worth heaps more, but its a local car, its got heaps of new parts available, its not concidered an imported luxury car either.

You just have to look at the 2 badges. One is Holden, the other is BMW.

Yeah it does suck though. It would cost me $50 a year more for a Mazda rx8 over the Utes insurance. & the ute is mostly stock.

Add into these factors the ease of stealing a near 20 year old car over a modern car, add into the fact that you have airbags, abs etc so it helps to avoid accidents.

Get the same quote with no age changes.

    I think its fair....

I think mose my point was that with the BMW, i pay insurance 3 times an basicly i have spent the same about on insurance as on my BMW.

Also, there is a 4 dr version and a 2 dr version.... the 4 dr is cheaper to insure but like 200 bux...

I asked why... they said because the 2 dr is classified as a sports car....lol

I want them to come out, n take a drive in the thing... then tell me its a "Sports car" lol

Oh, if my dad was to insure that car... 400 bux... so its not that its "Expensive to fix" it them jst discriminating against me for no other reason that im young and male...

Not that i've ever made a my fault claim, or that i speed alot... just.

I just think that if I have a claim thats my fault... then sure... charge me an arm and a leg...

But so far i've basically proven i'm an alright driver but not having accidents and not having alot of speeding tickets (2 over 4 years).

PLUS, my gf asker to be insured a while back n she got rating 2 out of the blokes.... Im a year older and i got rating 3...

Anyway, thats my little rant for the day....

I just ended up going 3rd party fired and theft with a 5000 cover if it gets stolen or burns down...

    Costs me 400 bux...

Note the well placed comma guys The ABS is what helps avoid accidents, but the Airbags will of course add a safety factor (not sure if that would decrease the premuim tho)

Possibly over-use of the comma could spell the problem?

    maybe it should read
"you have airbags to help avoid injuries and ABS etc to help avoid accidents

and Jesterarts try getting a quote on the same monaro using the age that you used for the BMW quote

I would have thought airbags would increase the cost of insurance, due to the added cost of replacing them in the case of an accident.

Does insurance cover ambos and stuff in the even of an accident? So if you had airbags the incidental costs might be down. I dunno. I would have thought tinted windows would increase my costs because they cost more if they are broken but it didn't!

It really depends on who you go with. Different insurers will give HUGE differences in prices for the same vehicle and details. After buying my s/c calais my quote with NRMA was about $1900, Shannons was about $1300. AAMI wouldn't touch me because I'm under 30 with a (unmodified) supercharged car. ING insurance was the best at $700 for agreed value of $13,400. If you don't like what you're paying, it doesn't take a genius to figure out that you should shop around.
Car theives should be treated just like horse theives and cattle rustlers in the days of the wild west... Hang them!

Perhaps insurance is so expensive because they need to have so many people on the phone to respond to stupidity such as this!

Come and drive my car and tell me there is anything different to the 2 and 4 door versions.

Ehh, they dont need to, one has 2 doors, the other has 4...... The risk has nothing to do with if the car is more sporty whatever. Its all about the statistics that show them that 2 door versions of anything have probably have more collisions/claims etc. They couldnt care less about the reasons for it, just structure their premiums on that. Why might the 2 door versions have more claims.......its all about the mentality of the people that end up buying a 2 door version. they perhaps see themselves as more sporty, take more risks and end up crashing the thing.

If wrx subarus never got stolen or had any claims, theyd be the cheapest cars to insure as well!

Four years of no claims, that puts you in a less risk category, but still high at your age(assume your are quite young), their stats still tell them you are high risk, there is nothing you can do about it. There is no reliable test that an insurance company can perform to find out that you are not indicative of the rest of people your age and treat you differently, it is not discrimination. 2 speeding tickets?, thats sure to not impress them either.

Personally, I dont know how young people can justify or afford these high premiums. Id just start out by getting myself a cheap $2000 car, 3rd party insurance and save my money for better things.

The insurance on my vx berlina, cost me $500 with racv. I thought that was steep!

I work for suncorp selling insurance and yeah it does sound wierd that an old bmw has a similar premium to a cv8 monaro... the main thing that will make the bmw so x'y is the fact that it is an older car, and a bmw and parts would be alot harder/more expensive to get and they are probably a higher theft risk aswell, your age and where you live all go towards the risk factor too... There are alot of reasons why the premiums could be so similar it would be difficult to pin point exactly why but those are my best guesses.

As for your rating number that goes by your dob, number of at fault claims and years of licenced driving experience...

An example of premium differences is the other day I had a guy call up for some quotes... The first was a 2008 suzuki gsx which was $500 per year with a value of around 15 grand he wanted on it.. The second was some Harly davidson sportster that is a 45000 bike yet it was only $230 per year... It all comes down to the risk factors for the specific vehicle...

Also remember, with insurance you get what you pay for... So if it is a really cheap premium keep your fingers crossed if you need to make a claim... Alot of companies can give cheap premiums because they pay out less claims... So keep that in mind when you insure your much loved car... It might seem like alot of money but when you get some old blind granny run clean up your a$$ you will be happy you have good insurance.. (no im not trying to promote suncorp) but it is true

Hopefully this makes some sence I am tired as hell and my brain isnt working properly lol all that damn insurance is getting to me!!
