    Angry Petrol price ripp-off

    this says it all

NEW YORK (AFP) - ExxonMobil reported Friday the largest US corporate annual profit in history at 40.6 billion dollars, benefiting from surging crude oil prices on strong demand, particularly in China and India.

The net profit was three percent higher than a year ago when the biggest US oil and gas firm reported a 2006 annual profit of 39.5 billion dollars, which had prompted ire over US policies said to favor big oil firms.

The multinational behemoth also posted a record fourth-quarter net profit, at 11.6 billion dollars, up 14 percent from the same period in 2006 as gains in crude.

yes, yes we are. They (the oil/petrol companies) have us bent over a barrel. An oil barrel. What are we going to do? Not buy petrol on the 23rd of Feb, to stick it up them? Big deal. Everyone will fill up on the 24th/25th. Mr Rudd has alot of follow up to do, according to his pre election talk. Less apologising to the general public (no this isnt a referance to the Aboriginies, so dont chew me out) and more action.

i'll say it then, i'm not bloody apologising, got no apology to make, had nothing to do with me...i can acknowledge it but that's as far as i'm going.

RUDD's going to have to get a back bone when it comes to the big 4 and do something right for the oz ppl.

Australia is a little bit fortunate in the fact that we have the largest uranium stocks in the world.

Maybe we should raise the prices a bit, but since i know sweet fa about economics im guessing it doesnt quite work that way.

But it would still go in our favour.

If you check RACV reports on the price breakdown of petrol there is actually 2 people getting rich off petrol. The Oil companys and the Goverment.

I do not see how the goverment can stand there and say to oil companys to make less profit when they (goverment) are not prepared to do the same.

I am strong believer in leading by example. I think its time the goverment cut back there taxes on petrol. Its not like they ae using that money for the roads. Here in melbourne i pay to use them as i drive along them.

What really gets up my nose is the availability of Australia’s natural resources and the fact that we just package them all up and export them.

If you have a look we have enough oil and gas to satisfy Australia’s demand totally.

Why don’t our Governments just tell the oil companies to p*ss off and refine and sell our own oil to ourselves? It sounds a little socialist/communist I know but why the hell not.

Very soon we will be paying an exorbitant amount for fuel and oil and the country could be self sufficient and we would pay a quarter of current prices!!!!

40 billion dollars!!!! That is outrageous, there are people starving all over the world and these bozos are raping and pillaging all of us!!!

We are a very small country when compared to the rest of the world. Most other countrys army's are the size of population of Australia.

I dont think saying f@@k the americans is the solution. If we turned our backs on every country in the world and then starting to brag about how good we are with our own oil and what not. How long till we too get invaded by the muscle of the world????????

I agree totally, we can't turn our backs on anyone but what is there to stop us independantly producing our own fuel and oil outside of the OPEC monopoly and their dictated market prices???

I just think that because we have the necessary resources we should not be able to use them to our own benefit......surely???

I think that an independant supplier of fuel is the way to go for Australia to cut fuel prices.

Yeah we're getting bent over and everyone knows it, as individuals we cant do nothing about it. aslong as we drive petrol cars they have us by the balls.

Buts seriously its what an extra $15-$25 a week since 2000? If you can’t afford that then it’s obvious that you riding a very thin line financially.

i dunno about the rest of australia but here in brisbane this week on tuesday night i filled up at 114p/ltr and this arvo it was 118p/ltr and during the peak prices it was at 125p/ltr not to bad in my books but it ****s me when the prices sky rocket to 135p/ltr and we all know its the crappy asian fuel we're getting thanks to the government and all they gotta do is lower their fuel tax a bit and start our own fuel supply and it would make they world of difference i bet.

I wish I could get fuel at 135p/ltr our normal price for the last 3 weeks has been 142p/ltr

Yes I am in Vic and i do understand that there is a different system in Qld

But are all a part of the same country so I really think that stuff like petrol should be pretty close to the same across the whole country aswell as lots of other things

Ehh....the price of fuel is too cheap. Should be double, triple......whatever is necessary to change our attitude to pumping unnecessary CO2 into the atmophere
Minimal money to the oil companies and hopefully more to the government. When the roads start getting empty, 4wd sales plummet, people start complaining about not enough bike racks...... we'll know the price is right

Its funny you mention 4wd's, i only ever complaints about fuel from people who own these....

I would pay $5 a litre if i had to for the joy of owning my car, would not phase me in the least. If i was worried over fuel prices the last car I would own is a performance car of any sort...or some huge mums urban taxi.

Im sure you would, and Im sure its not going to worry anyone that can afford a ferrari either. Its the majority we are after, and Im sure $5/L might just leave a few more performance cars parked in the driveway.

My LPG bill is $15+ extra Since late 2007! That's a lot to me, I live off centrelink at the moment because I study. I only get $115 a week (luckily my food gets paid for by my dad), so that's 10% extra of my total money gone. I was struggling as it is, and now I'm eating into my savings.
But still, at least I didn't buy a car on petrol. I can't believe I even considered it. I would have sold it by now and I'd have no money at all!

My major gripe is that the government takes a percentage of petrol price. Not sure what it is, 30% maybe? So if petrol is $1, government gets 30c of it. Yet when petrol is $1.50, government gets 45c of it... That's bull**** if you ask me, if they want money, take a cut, but not a percentage! Why do they think that they deserve a percentage? They are just making millions more because petrol prices went up. Millions that they lived without before! Millions that come out of OUR pockets!
How much we pay at the station should be linear, but it's logarithmic because the higher the cost of petrol to the supplier, we not only pay that extra for the petrol itself but we pay the government more as well.

it's 42 cents per litre or something similar i think.

scenario: the govt. stops taking that money from petrol.

now, how do they pay for roads to be built/maintained?

in a country such as New Guinea, if they stopped taking that money in taxes, theoretically officials would have to stop using it to pay for luxury yachts and other spoils of corruption.

in australia, relatively free of corruption, it means stuff doesn't get done. until you can make that connection, saying that the govt. should collect less tax doesn't have much meaning or credibility.

edit: OK that's a bit over simplistic and perhaps overly generous to govt, but the general point is made.

umm rego and all the speeding/traffic fines...btw i though thats where some of the rego money went...to fix roads and maintain them.

we need the petrol tax to keep other countries going...we can't be seen to be looking after our own thats just not right we have to look after every other 3rd world country and even well developed nations (usa-katrina)

I honestly cant complain, even though gas prices rise, Im happy I am stil paying less than I would with normal fuel. If I start complaining, thats when I start walking.
