Was wondering hwo i go about registering a trailer that hasnt had rego for 2 years, and that i dont have a reciept of purchase for ? I know ti needs weigh bridge certificate and a blueslip but will i have to prove to the RTA that its mine and not the bloke i bought it of 2 years ago unregistered?
in Vic you don't have to register trailers if they are under 640 kg GVM. (i think)
i've never bothered registering mine. as long as it never goes over scales reading above 640 kg i should be right
if you're referring to a semi trailer that's a different ball game
Nah just a 180kg when empty box trailer, and im in NSW
pretty sure its just a matter of going in and getting the papers filled out for it... shouldnt need a roadworthy as its only a trailer![]()
It needs a blueslip cause it been out of rego for 2 years, my drama will be proving i own it, maybe i could angle grind off the chassis numbers, as has been done before and just say its homebuilt and apply for a new number
if it was previously registered in your name, it should be easy enough. if not, my understanding is it's still easy. if it hasn't been reported stolen, and you are in possession of the trailer (why else would you offer to pay for the rego?), i am told they usually reason that it's yours.
Its got a chassis number and number plate form last rego, so it shoudl be in the RTA system, im just worried if i sell it, and the new buyer goes to register it and im not the previous registered owner if they will let him??
i'm pretty sure you'll be right. they aren't very scientific about it.
if they suspect you've stolen it, they'll just bring the boys in blue around, which is all the easier if they've got your details on the registration database.
Just write up a dodgy reciept for it.Its not stolen so just write up a new one and have all the correct details on it.Dirty up the paper so it looks 2 years old.
when i built my trailer. it needed blue slip and weigh bridge cert.
as for proving you own it just do a receipt with all the numbers on it and do a dodgey signature
Did you get given a complience plate to put on it and if so by whom
?
the compliance plate was purchased from a caravan and trailer shop at kograh(sydney) for like $10 or something. the guy that did the blue slip stamped the numbers on it
It takes more than just a receipt with the numbers on it. You will need the previous owners details. You have to supply them so they can match the numbers on the system to the owner. They will know who the owner was, but they need to know that you know too, and that it is a legitimate purchase.
I know his name but what good will be putting that " I purchased this trailer of a John Smith of such and such adress" if i dont have his licence number or his signature, will the RTA accept that? im not going to this blokes house to harrass him for his licence and sig, i think ill just angle grind the numbers off and start from scratch, buy a compliance plate ie
Im sure the RTA will look up the old number plate and see it was John Smiths, and its not been reported stolen so there shouldnt be a problem unless John Smiht has reported it stolen.
If you have the details then it won't be a problem. They are not as strict with a trailer as with a car. Tell them it was a cash deal, no receipt. The numbers on the trailer should correlate with his details, they will contact him to confirm he in fact sold the trailer and it wasn't stolen.
Think its still just easier if i grind and restart, ie if they cant contact him then i cant register the trailer !
