Toyota van starts, idles bad then stalls

hey all, just a query to see if anyone knows, my brother has a 1.8L (2Y engine) Toyota Lite-Ace van which he is having a bit of trouble with..

the van starts, but when left to idle, it stalls. it does stay going when the revs are up a bit, but soon as the foot leaves the accelerator pedal it dies.

does anyone here have any idea about what may be happening?

Maybe its in need of a tune up.Check the resistencein the spark plug leads,check and or replace spark plugs,check/replace fuel filter,check the air filter,replace and adjust points and adjust timing,check and adjust fuel/idel mixtures.Also whilst the engine is running with the air cleaner removed slowly place your hand over the top of the carbi and if the engine revs dont rise well i would suggest to look for a vaccum leak.Maybe at the bottom of the carbi or the inlet manifold gasket.But if there is no vaccum leaks present maybe the carbi will need a rebuild.Hope that helps.
