Adelaide drag race suspects face charges

The drivers of two cars suspected of drag racing in suburban Adelaide, causing a crash in which six people were injured, are facing charges, police say.

Police said the white Subaru Impreza was believed to have been racing alongside a maroon Nissan Skyline before becoming airborne, hitting a bus and landing on another car.

The cars had been "travelling together at high speeds" on Port Wakefield Road at Burton about 6.30pm (CDT) Saturday when the Subaru crossed the median strip and slammed into a bus then a Toyota.

The female driver of the Toyota was taken to Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious head and chest injuries, while five others also required hospital treatment.

An 18-year-old man from Parafield Gardens, believed to be the driver of the Skyline, was arrested and charged with causing serious injury by dangerous driving and will appear in court at a later date.

Inspector Stuart McLean of the South Australian Police said the driver of the white car was injured in the crash but was likely to face a number of charges as a result of investigations.

"Our initial investigation suggests both vehicles were travelling at high speeds prior to the crash," inspector McLean said.

A police spokesman later said the driver of the white car was treated in hospital for minor injuries.

"The cause of the crash is still under investigation," Inspector McLean said.

"However, crashes don't happen by accident, the vast majority of them occur because of poor choices.

"... The events of the past 24 hours highlight how dangerous and how reckless some driving behaviour can be and the consequences of that."

Traffic restrictions were to be in place at the scene of the accident until 4pm (CDT) Sunday as police re-examine the scene of the crash.

Did anyone see the images on the channel 10 news?!?! The WRX had no wheels or basically any suspension left, the camry that it collided with had it's entire roof torn OFF and GONE, the roof of the WRX was basically gone as well.

Pretty horrifying images. I would say "when will people learn" but what a waste of breath that would be. Idiots.

I think you'll find the roof of the camry was cut off.

Oh LOL. I was gonna say freakin geez how did the woman get away with head and chest injuries if a WRX did that to her car with her in it?!

Well, at least it wasn't Commodores this time, but that doesn't mean much.

I heard of two crashes from our town alone and last night my dad rolled his dirt Go-Kart during a night race and buggered up his shoulder because another racer's brakes failed!
